White sandy caribbean beach with deep blue sky and turquoise water in Antigua

Holidays to Antigua

Blessed with sandy beaches, leafy hills and endless sun-kissed days, not to mention a bounty of tasty rum and fresh seafood, Antigua holidays are the stuff of Caribbean dreams.

Sea for yourself

The insanely beautiful Antigua, the so-called Land of 365 Beaches, is made for idyllic lazy days soaking up the sun (see below for tips on where to go) and active days exploring the big blue (swimming, kayaking, diving and so on).

In the mood for a bit of fun? Why not try scooter snorkelling? Just off Galleon Beach, hold on to the little motor and let it do all the hard work as you glide past turtles, rays and jazzy tropical fish.

Barbuda day trips

Antigua’s sister island, Barbuda, is only a 90-minute ferry ride away, which makes for a pretty easy day trip. Here, you can lounge on yet more beaches and embrace your inner bird nerd at the island’s massive frigate colony.

After a morning tour watching the spectacular frigates, sail on to Barbuda’s famous pastel pink shores for Insta snaps and afternoon naps.

Caribbean cuisine

Although there are plenty of spots to chow down on a burger, be sure to save some space for Antiguan grub. With influences from all over, the island’s cuisine is splendidly diverse.

A popular dish for dinner is saltfish and fungee (smushed cornmeal and okra). Conch chowder or curry is another fave and a staple in local restaurants. Finally, you’re beyond help if your sweet tooth can’t be satisfied by super sugary Antiguan black pineapples. Try it and then get back to us!

Remember your past ports

History? Plenty. And you can learn about the island’s past at historic sites. Dive in at the Docklands Museum in Nelson’s Dockyard and, in the capital St John’s, make a photo stop at the painted bust of the first post-independence PM, Sir Vere Cornwall Bird.

Elsewhere, visit Betty’s Hope – Antigua’s first sugar plantation, dating back to 1674. The info centre sheds light on how gruelling life was for the farm’s enslaved people.

Top beaches: Bay watch

Dickenson Bay is home to plenty of amenities, with bucket loads of restaurants, bars and watersports. The aptly named Half Moon Bay is a proper stunner and ace for snorkelling, while little ones can splash around in the shallows. Lunch recommendations? Make it grilled fish and cold beers at the beach bar! For a quieter vibe, head to the sandy, forest-backed Rendezvous Bay. Sure, you have to hike a couple of miles to get there, but that just makes that first lagoon swim feel even better!

Family-friendly: Island fun

With resorts for the whole fam-bam and safe beaches for splish-splashing, Antigua holidays are made for families. Beyond the hotels’ beach hut activities, there’s Swash Water Park on Darkwood Beach in St Mary’s, with Total Wipeout-style inflatable obstacles in the sea! Animal-obsessed youngsters will love the Donkey Sanctuary, where you can give the animals’ manes a good old brush (fair warning: donkey adoptions are available). For adventurous tykes, sign up for Antigua Rainforest Zipline Tours. Even four-year-olds are allowed to ride!

Best of the rest: Antiguan adventures

Antigua serves up plenty of thrilling activities, like exploring the Indian Cave at Two Foot Bay National Park, with its ancient petroglyphs. Next, a Pillars of Hercules hike delivers a sweet mix of views and history. From Galleon Beach, rocky trails lead up to Shirley Heights (one of the island’s best lookouts), passing 18th-century gravestones before landing back at the huge stone formations on the beach.

When to go to Antigua

The good news is that Antigua is a reliably sunny and hot destination for most of the year! But, with dry, hot conditions and a breeze to take the edge off, it’s pretty much perfect for winter sun holidays.

Summer is, predictably, the hottest time of year, and is very humid. Hurricane season runs from June to November, meaning heavy downpours and very strong winds (but it’s not constant, and September tends to get the brunt of it). The driest time of year is spring, ideal for thawing out after a long British winter! You should be able to find a good deal on a cheap Antigua holiday outside of the winter sun months.
