Holidays to Lanzarote

Staggering volcanic landscapes, glorious year-round sun, beaches for days… if there’s one thing a Lanzarote holiday has got, it’s personality! Visit with the fam, with friends or with your better half – there’s something to appeal to everyone.

Lava nice scenery

Known as the Island of Volcanoes, Lanzarote is wild and rugged, with dramatic peaks and craters all over the shop. Visit Timanfaya National Park to see the epically named Montañas del Fuego (Mountains of Fire) in all their glory – a bus tour will get you up close to the lava flows and moon-like landscape.

And here’s a pleasant surprise: there’s a winery up here, with vines that grow out of volcanic ash! It would be rude not to stop for a glass or three, wouldn’t it?

Sandy shores

Black volcanic sand or long, golden beaches? The choice is yours on a Lanzarote holiday!

There’s a whole lot of fun to be had at the popular Playa de las Cucharas, which boasts golden sand and plenty of watersports. If you have the fam in tow, little ’uns will love Playa Flamingo in Playa Blanca. Cute name. Safe swimming. Win-win.

Just the two of you? The loooong Playa de Famara in the northwest is perfect for romantic barefoot strolls, with killer sunsets and views to boot! Or book a whale or dolphin watching tour for some flippin’ fun.

Sporty spice

Sticking to a sun-lounger for your whole holiday is obviously bang on, but you can also turn up the action if you want.

Lanzarote is a cyclists’ haven, with lush long rides and epic views. Hire a bike to pedal around the coast or up into the hills.

Meanwhile, surf’s up at Famara – one of the best surfing spots in Europe. Then strap on a tank and dive to the Museo Atlántico, an underwater sculpture museum (it beats the pants off a stuffy exhibition!).

Coasts with the most

If you’re staying in one of Lanzarote’s main south coast resorts, you’re already close to top beaches for swimming and sunbathing. Drape yourself over a lounger, safe in the knowledge there’s a cold bev and a packet of crisps a few steps away. For the IG shot, head to Caletón Blanco, where white sand contrasts with black volcanic rock and azure water. Elsewhere, you can snorkel off Playa Chica in Puerto del Carmen, and there’s epic surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing in Playa de Famara in the north.

Slides and submarines

Lanzarote is amazing for kids. Aside from the beaches – all those beaches! – there’s a heap of stuff to keep children occupied. Saddle up for an evening of fun at Rancho Texas’s Country Nights or swing into Aquapark Costa Teguise to whizz down slides and challenge the fam to a paintball battle. Cloudy day? You won’t notice on a submarine safari, diving 30m (nearly 100ft!) underwater to spot all manner of marine friends. For older kids, book a surfing lesson in Famara – new profile pic guaranteed.

Get your sweat on

Lanzarote holidays are as action-packed as you can handle! Explore the volcanic scenery inland at Timanfaya National Park, then catch a camel ride at the edge of the park (a great photo op for your IG). And you’ve got to drop in to Museo Atlántico, the amazing underwater sculpture museum off Playa Blanca. Elsewhere, you can harness the elements windsurfing and kitesurfing at Famara, the island’s longest beach. Or why not cycle around the coastline and take a stroll on remote beaches?

When to go to Lanzarote

The main appeal of Lanzarote is its all-year sunny climate – the Canary Islands are all a top choice when it comes to winter sun. Even in the depths of January, temperatures often reach 20C. For us Brits, that’s summer!

School holiday crowds start building in July, so if you’re looking for a hot holiday with a bit more space around the pool, visit in June or late September!

For surfing, the best swells occur between October and December. It’s also a great time for a cheap Lanzarote holiday.
