Holidays to Canary Islands

Volcanos, sand dunes, beaches, whales, all-night parties and year-round sunshine all in one place? Yep, welcome to the Canary Islands holiday! And we’ve only just scratched the surface.

Ocean breeze

With coastlines as dreamy as the ones in the Canary Islands, it’s no surprise to learn a lot of your time is going to be spent by, in and on the Atlantic Ocean. Highlights beyond beach bumming include surfing Fuerteventura’s windswept shores (Playa del Moro’s a top spot), diving to the underwater museum in Lanzarote, snorkelling in Los Lobos and whale-spotting near Los Gigantes.

Bikinis and board shorts in winter

Say goodbye to the UK’s woolly hat weather and hello to swimwear because the Canary Islands are perfect for winter-sun holidays. Yes, you can top up your tan in the Costa Adeje or Costa Teguise during their glorious summer months, but visit in February and you’ll still enjoy highs of 21C - ideal for golf in Maspalomas or tackling Mount Teide’s mega-hike!

Rocking landscapes

Unreal. That’s the one word that will keep spilling out of your mouth as you experience some of the Canary Islands’ epic landscapes. Here, you can walk above the clouds at La Palma’s El Roque de los Muchachos (aka Rock of the Boys), explore volcanoes in the Mars-like Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote and trek through La Gomera’s ancient Endor-esque forests (alas, no Ewoks here). If hiking boots aren’t on your packing list, a cable car will whisk you to the top of Mount Teide instead.

Culture and carnival

Pack your sequins, feathers and salsa shoes because the carnival in Tenerife is hot news! It’s likened to Rio for its colourful costumes, floats and street parties. For an equally vibrant but slightly chiller vibe, head to Lanzarote, where César Manrique has transformed the island into an open-air gallery. Wander around the Fundación César Manrique, his island home, and make sure you experience Jameos del Agua. Built in and around lava caves, it’s not your typical art and culture centre.

Top destinations in the Canary Islands

Tenerife

Spain’s highest mountain, Michelin Stars and one of the world’s best carnivals, Tenerife is a playful island, day and night.

Lanzarote

Home to more than 100 volcanoes, Lanzarote has also been shaped by Cesar Manrique’s amazing art. Superb diving tops it off!

Gran Canaria

Golden sandy beaches, verdant mountains, history in Las Palmas and plenty of fresh fish served with local wine, that’s Gran Canaria. Enough said.

Fuerteventura

Ahoy there! Fuerteventura’s wind and waves are ideal for sailing, surfing and watersports. The soft sandy beaches are dreamy too.

Costa Adeje

Sunshine, beautiful beaches and the epic Siam Park waterpark make the Costa Adeje the top spot for families in Tenerife.

Puerto Rico

Beach by day, bars by night with shopping in between, Puerto Rico is Gran Canaria’s gold bullion of a holiday resort.

Surfin’ safari

If soft, sandy beaches and watersports are what you’re after, Fuerteventura’s your island. Surf the wave-tastic waters of El Cotillo or pitch up on Corralejo’s Grandes Playas (Big Beaches) to sunbathe. If you’re in Gran Canaria, Playa de Mogán is great for snorkelling, while Maspalomas’s sand dunes are, well, sand-sational. Over in Lanzarote, Playa Blanca has three blue flag beaches (show-off) for sunny siestas and the remote Playa de Papagayo has “oh my gosh, this is so beautiful vibes”. Holidaying in Tenerife? No probs. Playa del Médano is for windsurfing, Playa Fañabe is for families and Playa del Duque is for beach bars. Done.

Island adventures

Sandy beaches, splash pools and sunshine – yeah, the Canary Islands is just what you need for a family holiday! Tenerife is always a good choice. Case in point is the Costa Adeje, where you and your kids can be snorkelling with turtles one day and splashing down the slides at Siam Park or Aqualand another. For adventure (and for older kids), sign up for a cable car ride to Mount Teide’s peak, a dune buggy tour in Corralejo and a short hike for short legs at Roque Nublo in Gran Canaria (the views are worth it). If it’s just sand, sun and sea you’re after, Playa Blanca in Lanzarote offers the perfect blue flag beach break.

Get ready to rumble

There’s plenty of nightlife for the night owls in the Canary Islands, wherever you stay. Party in Puerto del Carmen or live la vida loca on the Veronicas Strip in Playa de las Americas. From the clubs of Gran Canaria’s Playa del Ingles to the cocktail bars of the Costa Adeje, expect to find yourself dancing in a beach club somewhere during your holiday. For evenings a little more laidback, Maspalomas, Playa del Ingles’s quiet neighbour, and Corralejo in Fuerteventura, offer wining and dining Spanish style (think tasty tempranillo and tapas, among other dishes and drinks, of course).

When to go to the Canary Islands

While each of its islands has something of a microclimate, the Spanish archipelago is an all-year-round destination, great for quintessential summer breaks and winter sun escapes. For sizzling sunshine that may burn a small hole in your wallet and family-friendly resorts at their holiday best, head during the peak summer months. It’ll be worth the extra pennies.

If you want a cheap Canary Islands holiday, look to the late spring or autumn months, avoiding February and March when the carnivals make things a tad more expensive. For hiking and biking, consider a break between February and May.
