Holidays to Amsterdam

Get ready for the LeBron James of city breaks. The capital of the Netherland’s café culture, uber-cool art scene and calming canals will have you saying Amster-DAM!

All night, every night

Amsterdam is a party-loving insomniac. And Leidseplein entertainment district is the place to wring the best bits of fun out of the early hours. Whether you boogie to live bands or superstar DJs, you can cut a rug until at least 5am.

Leave something in the tank for the Amsterdam nightlife boss – De Wallen, the historic red-light district. Bars, boutiques and booths crisscross the canal – expect boisterous Brits and sights that can’t be unseen.

A hoity-toity holiday

Perfect your pensive art-gallery walk, cos you’re gonna need it for the gazillion masterpieces. Spend your morning with Andy Warhol and Damien Hirst, your afternoon with the Dutch masters – Van Gogh, Rembrandt and loads more – and your evening feeling inferior.

More culture? Ask for directions in your best Dutch accent to De Royal Concertgebouw (the Royal Concert Building and one of the finest concert halls in the world) or De Oude Kerk – Amsterdam’s oldest building. Look at you, you’re practically fluent!

Burn off those bitterballen

Bitterballen may mean nothing to you now, but trust us, after a few days in Amsterdam, they’ll be your main food group. Stewed meat rolled in breadcrumbs then fried, they’re as indulgent as they sound.

Don’t worry about fitting in your holiday wardrobe, you’ll cycle them off before they even start planning their lifetime on your hips. Biking is by far the best way to see this city, so saddle up.

The canals are a-callin’

Amsterdam is the Venice of the North or – as we think of it – the Dutch Birmingham. There are lots of canals. For a duck’s eye view of the city sights, take a boat along the Prinsengracht canal.

Or wet your whistle with a walk along the Brouwersgracht – Brewers’ Canal – for a tour through gins, liqueurs and questionable spirits. Just try not to fall in on the way home!

Sneak Peek

Best for... Culture-craving, party-poppin’ Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde types. 🎉

Go... By bike. To the museum, the club, the park, everywhere. 🚲

You have to... Eat bitterballen for breakfast, lunch and dinner. 🧆

Culture and history: Ooh la lah-de-dah

If you like a bit of art ‘n’ culture ‘n’ that, you’re in the right place. Channel Melvyn Bragg (a great reference if you’re under 40) through the Golden Age galleries of the Rijksmuseum, the young upstarts of MoCo or the works of the one-eared wonder at the Van Gogh Museum. Pay Anne Frank House a visit while you’re here too. It can get a little crowded, but it’s more than worth rubbing shoulders for a moving meander through her all-too-short but awe-inspiring life.

Food and drink: Did we mention bitterballen?

Bitterballen meat is cooked in a roux-thickened stew, then rolled into a ball and fried… Crispy on the outside, creamy, tender and juicy on the inside… But delicious as they may be, they aren’t the be-all and end-all of Amsterdam’s culinary scene. You need to try fried Kibbeling fish, a comfort plate of Stamppot (kaley-mash with sausages) and round a meal off with Appeltaart (can you guess?!). Oh, and don’t you dare leave without nibbling your way around the cheese stalls at Noordermarkt – it’s so edam gouda!

Nightlife: Something to *not* tell the grandkids

What happens in the ‘dam stays in the ‘dam, for everyone’s sake. But, if you’re up for making memories you’ll take to the grave, Leidseplein keeps secrets. Its clubs blast DnB, Techno, House, Deep Filthstep and plenty more genres we’ve never heard of. If 5am sounds like an early finish, Rembrandtplein may be more your bag. On the right night, you can throw shapes here until the break of dawn. Just don’t make eye contact with the morning joggers on your way home.

When to go to Amsterdam

There’s no bad time for a holiday in Amsterdam. Butt-dialled your boss? Amsterdam. Cat gone missing? Amsterdam! Struck by lightning? AMSTERDAM!

Even in the depths of the Dutch winter, the Christmas markets give you the fuzzies. Winter’s your best bet for a cheap Amsterdam holiday too.

Want to liven up your Insta feed? The autumn leaves bookending the city’s canals have got you. You don’t need to be a botanist to know spring is the best time for filter-drenched snaps of the tulips in bloom either. And, of course, June to August is the sweet spot for alfresco bar hopping.
