Holidays to Malta

With epic wreck diving, mindbendingly old temples and sun-drenched beaches, Malta holidays really put the go in archipelago!

Malta-ply your fun in the sun!

This little Mediterranean archipelago is hashtag-blessed with coasts doing the absolute most – think stunning turquoise seas and golden sand under almost year-round sunshine. With a killer combo like that it’d be rude not to spend hours horizontal on Malta’s sizzling beaches.

Head to Għajn Tuffieħa for a chilled-out sunbathing sesh (just follow the steps down to the cove of caramel-coloured sand) or visit next-door Golden Bay for watersports of every kind.

Need to cool off? That’s what the Med is made for! Malta’s top spots are paradise for swimming, snorkelling and diving.

Get your learning on

If you’re a history buff, Malta will be knight up your alley (sorry!). For a tiny country, Malta has an absurd number of historic sites, from megalithic temples built donkeys’ years ago to the stunning capital, Valletta, which doubles as a living museum.

Get some interior decorating inspo from baroque churches and decadent palaces (they bring the bling). Or, pop into a museum to bring history to life – it’ll give you plenty of talking points over a traditional Maltese dinner.

Oh, go on, just the one

Speaking of dinner, Malta’s menus go in hard on seafood. Fresh fillets, lampuki fish pie, grilled swordfish, aljotta fish soup, pasta with squid or octopus sauces… you really could indulge in a delectable fish dish every day of your holiday.

That said, don’t sleep on the island’s comfort dishes. Pastizzi stuff ricotta or mushy peas in flaky pastry ( yum!), while kapunata is an olivey, tomatoey and veggie-y stew. Of course, there are beach bars galore for seaside cocktails and extra-cold pints too.

It’s better down where it’s wetter

In one of Europe’s top diving destinations, it makes sense to dive deep, right? There are shore dives that avoid the palaver of boarding a boat, and plenty of skippers keen to take you to further-out wrecks and caves.

If you can handle a rocky walk in, you can swim through Gozo’s famous Blue Hole. Entering the ocean on the other side you might just find yourself in the company of parrot fish, triggerfish, tuna or even an octopus’s garden. Lush!

Crystal waters and caramel sands

Malta’s pebbly coves usually have the clearest water (bring your snorkel) but its sandy beaches take the crown for watersports. Golden Bay, with its red sand, dunes and Blue Flag, does a particularly good line in jet-skiing, powerboating, bouncy sofa riding, paddle boating, paddleboarding, kayaking and any other sea-based shenanigans you can think of. Gozo’s longest beach is Ramla Bay Beach, a proper find for families with cafes, snacks and other opportunities for refreshment. Don’t miss out on the dazzling Blue Lagoon on Comino either. Its no-filter good looks are a must for any self-respecting IG story.

Ancient history and cool culture

Valletta has too many historic buildings and museums for its own good. Be cultural once a day and you still won’t fit it all in. St John’s Co-Cathedral is dripping in gold – less is more does not apply here!. The Grandmaster’s Palace is proper posh too, while the art at MUŻA (the National-Community Art Museum) is top quality. Hop back in time at the megalithic temple complex at Ħaġar Qim and Mnajdra, believed to have been built between 3,600 BC and 3,000 BC. If you wanna see something amazing, visit Mnajdra for the spring or autumn equinox. It’s when the central doorway frames the sunrise perfectly, à la Stongehenge!

Endless family fun in the sun

Bliss on the beach, snorkelling with the fishies, chicken nuggets for days and endless entertainment everywhere you look… in short, Malta hearts families. For a moment without sand in every nook and cranny, check out Malta National Aquarium and Splash & Fun Water Park. That one is deffo for the kiddies with slides galore, a lazy river and ice cream (and did we mention chicken nuggets?). Meanwhile, Popeye Village near Mellieħa is a unique kid-friendly pick that’ll have them itching to eat their greens! While they may not know it from the 80s musical, Popeye, they’ll certainly have a smashing time.

When to go to Malta

Spring and autumn are best for a cheap holiday to Malta. Winter isn’t too bad when it comes to the weather either (for us Brits, at least!), but many businesses shut up shop for the season. It’s reliably sunny from March to October.

The school holidays are always the busiest, making September a happy medium. It still hits the high 20s, so you’re not missing out on the heat by travelling after the summer rush.
