Holidays to Greece

Holidays to Greece are things of legend. They bring the wow factor with ancient ruins, beautiful beaches for sun gods and goddesses and seafood that is borderline mythical.

A coastline for every occasion

Greece’s beaches take some beating. With 8,500 miles of coastline across the Mediterranean, Aegean and Ionian seas and more than 200 inhabited islands, there’s a stretch of sand for every kind of beach day.

Sit and sizzle on some of Paleokastritsa’s shores in Corfu – pack merely a book and smile. Or kick it up a notch with waterskiing, windsurfing, kite surfing and plenty more board-based boredom busters in Rhodes or Crete.

If you prefer beach aesthetics to beach activities, head for the Aegean’s Cyclades archipelago for a sunset you’ll never forget. Ouzo optional (but recommended. Yamas!).

Modern luxuries in Ancient Greece

Greece isn’t all cheap beach breaks, whitewashed buildings and mountains of moussaka, feta and salad (alright, Greek salad). It’s also ouzo-ing in culture - it’s the birthplace of Western civilisation.

In Athens, book a tour of the big names – the Acropolis, Agora and Parthenon – or just wander into any local town to see something straight from the pages of a history book. Take a run out to Olympia or an island hopper to the Theatre of Epidaurus, across the bay from Athens. Or get all romantic and watch the sunset from the Temple of Poseidon’s clifftop.

Hop from holiday to holiday

You’ll never run out of room to roam in Greece. Go for cold beers and ancient sites in Athens. Take donkey rides for sensational volcano-meets-crystal-clear-water views in luxurious Santorini. And hit Mykonos for untamed all-nighters in epic bars and clubs.

From nearly all of the islands, you can go on boat trips for BBQs in quiet coves, snorkelling in craggy caves or floating in silence miles out to sea. Or mix it up a little more with a multi-stop break across three, four, five or more islands in a week or two.

Top beaches: Do as much or as little as you fancy

To do little more than lift your glass to your mouth, head for Falassarna in Crete. Lapping waves and the distant hum of jet skis are the perfect soundtrack for a snooze in the sun. At the other end of the sandy spectrum, the beach bars at Koukounaries Beach in Skiathos attract a more boho crowd.

If that still sounds too tranquil and swimming and sunbathing is a bit yawn, head to Prasonisi, the southern tip of Rhodes for world-class kitesurfing, windsurfing and all that jazz.

Food and drink: Pack your elasticated waists

Forget your after-pub kebab mess back home. Greece knows kebabs. And you get to eat them on the beach, from a sun-drenched terrace, with insanely nice views – and local wine or an ice-cold beer to boot. For a crash course in traditional Greek cuisine, try Crete. Think family-run restaurants serving home-cooked moussaka with aubergine and tomatoes grown in the Cretan sun. For seafood, calamari and deeeelish wine, Santorini wins – it’s 10/10 for pretty too. Lesvos does olives and produces much of Greece’s ouzo. It also has a food festival every July.

Culture and history: Cradle of civilisation (no exaggeration)

The Greek islands inspired Socrates, Plato, Pythagoras and Homer – and they did alright, creating civilisation and all. Obvs Athens has all the massive hitters, but there is a whole lot more to Greece. Those dramatic myths you read in primary school – you can visit the place they are from. Crete had its Minotaur and labyrinth. The Olympic Games sprang from Olympia’s uber-competitive athletes. After the Trojan War – the one with the horse – Odysseus had a solid decade of adventures getting back to Ithaca. And then there’s the whole Pompeii-frozen-in-time-by-a-volcano tragedy. Go, explore.

When to go to Greece

If you’re a slave to the sun, get here between June and August when temperatures regularly top 30C. Expect buckets of sunshine and tons of tourists. For a cheap Greece holiday without a fight for a sunlounger, hop on a plane in April and May or September and October.

April and May are the perfect months to take in the sights without working up a sweat too. In spring, the sun is still shining, but you’ll have less competition for the perfect snap of the Parthenon.

Top Destinations in Greece

Athens

The best place to get your Indiana Jones on, Athens is a modern city that brings Ancient Greece to life.

Corfu

Corfu’s compact old town, well-serviced beaches and abundance of water and theme parks make it our family holiday top pick.

Crete

A cultural big-hitter, Crete has the lot. Come here for ancient history a short flip-flop from the beach.

Halkidiki

Halkidiki’s jutting peninsulas make it great for all the ‘ings’ – surfing, windsurfing, wakeboarding. You get the idea.

Kefalonia

Kefalonia, in the Ionian Sea, is Greek culture in mini. Think village tavernas, sleepy harbours and mountains of grilled octopus.

Kos

Popular with couples, Kos is ancient ruins by day, parties by night – and sleeping on the beach in the morning.
