A panoramic view of St. Paul bay in Lindos, Rhodes with the acropolis in the background

Holidays to Lindos

A holiday in Lindos reveals the Greece you’ve seen on IG. Here, all Rhodes (sorry!) lead to whitewashed buildings, turquoise waters and staggering remnants of ancient civilisations.

It’s all beachy

Rhodes is blessed with some of the best beaches in Greece – if not the world. And Lindos rather selfishly hogs a good chunk of them. But there’s nothing copy and paste about these beautiful bays. From the film set perfection of Navarone Bay to the verdant gorgeousness of Glystra, whatever your mood, there’s a beach vibe to suit in Lindos.

The rocky coast also serves up top-tier snorkelling conditions. Pull up a pew with Poseidon at the sheltered beach of St Paul’s Bay — one of the highlights of all the Greek islands. On the right day, you might even spot sea bream and tentacley octopus!

The culture that birthed the classics

All whitewashed buildings, ancient architecture and a FOMO-inducing old town, Lindos shows off Greece at its greatest.

Start your tour of historical highlights at the towering Church of Panagia. Built in the 1300s, it looks remarkably sprightly for its age, with frescos (almost) as fresh as the day they were daubed.

The Monument of Ioannis Zigdis is another sight for sightseeing eyes. And the truth is, it’s all about the backdrop. From this vantage point, you can gaze across the bay all the way to the Acropolis. Arrive in time for sunrise for a truly special experience.

Food of the gods

What springs to mind when you think of the Greek classics? Homer? Sophocles? How about halloumi, saganaki, calamari, tzatziki and the rest? Indulge in Greek cuisine at its very best at Agostinos. We’re sure it tastes better in the rooftop garden too.

Tuck into seafood with the ultimate sea view at Mythos. Look down upon Lindos Harbour and the Acropolis as you chomp on kleftiko and sweet, sweet baklava till your belt buckle bulges.

You can please your palette even more at Thalatta, where its Greek wine pairing would make Dionysus proud. (That’s the Greek god of wine, don’t you know!).

Top beaches: Ride the waves and catch some rays

Do it all in a day at Lindos Beach. Bookended by the Acropolis and a cluster of brilliant restaurants, there’s plenty here to explore between your tanning sessions. St Paul’s Bay is at the other end of the sandy spectrum. This peaceful spot is all warm, calm waters and sun-loungers lining the shore. For fun with all the fam, head for Vlycha and ride the waves from the ‘comfort’ of a rubber ring, big banana or crazy sofa.

Culture and history: Acropolis now!

Ancient Greece is alive and well out here. And it doesn’t get much more ancient – or indeed, any more Greek – than the Acropolis of Lindos. Wander amidst columns from the Temple of Athena and feel like you’ve stepped into a history book. If 4 BC feels a little too contemporary for you, take it back a couple more years at the Tomb of Kleoboulos. Worth it just for the walk, you’ll tick off the Monument of Ioannis Zigdis and the old stone windmills on your way up too.

Nightlife: Nights that are something of a symposium

As the sun sets over Lindos harbour, its bars are throwing up their shutters. Start your night right on the rooftop at Courtyard, complete with Acropolis views. For a higher class of cocktail, try La Presidenta. In the heart of town, it’s an odyssey of local and classic cocktail faves, from the negroni to the scorpion. Choose something from the cigar menu just because you can. And when it’s time to cool off, hit the Ice Bar for -6C spirit sipping and freezing good fun.

When to go to Lindos

For burning days beneath the rays, leg it to Lindos between June and September. With temperatures tickling 30C, that sun will top up your tan in no time at all. Cheap holidays to Lindos are easy to find in the off season. While it’s certainly sleepier from December to March, at this time of year, mid-teen temperatures will keep you warmer than at home. And the ancient sites and delicious dishes are still right where summer left them.

The sun-and-savings sweet spot is the shoulder season of May or October. At this time of year, temperatures creep into the mid-20s and rainfall is as rare as ambrosia.
