The beach Pefkos of Skyros island, Greece

Holidays to Pefkos

When you want more from a Rhodes resort than ouzo slushies and foam parties, a holiday to Pefkos is your best bet. This is the real Greece!

Beaches to make you swoon

On the east coast of Rhodes, Pefkos (also known as Pefki) is the OG of Greek beach holidays. With tranquil golden sands lined with pine trees and lapped by calm turquoise seas, the beaches here are simply beautiful – and a far cry from the raucous bar-lined sands of Faliraki!

Throw in some authentic tavernas, colourful boats for hire and plenty of swimming and snorkelling fun, and a Pefkos holiday is a true fly-and-flop getaway.

Food of the gods

Moussaka, souvlaki, kleftiko… if the Greek gods had Deliveroo, they’d order a nightly takeaway from Pefkos. From lively bars and family-run tavernas to romantic restaurants right on the beach, Pefkos caters to all appetites.

For some sensational seafood, check out the waterfront restaurants. At Philosophia Beach Taverna, you can tuck into authentic Greek dishes like the tomatoey, feta-y dream that is shrimp saganaki. Yum!

Jet skis and chill

If you’ve had your fill of relaxing on the beach and you’re ready to dial up the adrenaline, it’s time to head out to sea. You’ll find a handful of watersports centres where you can choose between windsurfing, kayaking, parasailing, jet skiing and pedalo-ing, or opt for the Greek holiday classic – a banana boat!

Lovely Lindos

Maybe your Pefkos holiday is about lying on a sun-lounger with the latest bestseller, or perhaps you’d rather get out there for an adventure of your own. If it’s the latter, make a beeline for Lindos, one of the prettiest villages in Greece and just a ten-minute drive away. With cobblestone streets, whitewashed chapels and friendly donkeys in straw hats, a day trip to Lindos is like walking through a Greek postcard.

Top beaches, from Blue Flag to Baywatch

The beaches in Pefkos are among the best on Rhodes, and of the four in the area, Lee Beach is king. This long sweep of golden sand is lapped by shallow, clear waters, and features snorkel-friendly coves at the far end. As for watersports, you can book windsurfing and kite-surfing lessons at the north end of the beach.

Quieter and with fewer facilities – but great for a romantic escape – try St Thomas Beach or the rocky, cliffy Fokia Bay. They’re both super pretty!

Culture and history in charming Lindos

Be sure to take a day trip to nearby Lindos. Its narrow cobbled streets are lined with whitewashed houses, bougie boutiques and traditional tavernas. Step inside a taverna and you’re likely to see the classic red-check tablecloths and moustachioed owners.

Hike up to the Acropolis of Lindos for spectacular views over the Aegean Sea. It’s also worth nipping into the charming 14th-century Church of Panagia to get your fix of Byzantine architecture.

Sun, sea and sandcastles

A Pefkos holiday is a top option for families, with flat golden sands perfect for sandcastles, and ice-cream parlours serving up delectable sundaes. And when the nippers get bored of digging up the beach, you can take them to see a live-action Finding Nemo on a glass-bottom boat trip.

Got teens on the trip? Faliraki’s water park is the largest in Greece and about an hour’s drive away.

When to go to Pefkos

There’s no shortage of sunshine in Pefkos. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, this Greek gem is heaven for sunseekers. July and August are the busiest months, with temperatures soaring to a sizzling 35C, and hotels and beaches absolutely buzzing. For a more chilled-out vibe, aim for May, June or September when there’s loads of sunshine and quieter beaches.

For a cheap Pefkos holiday, visit in April or October when the sun is still shining, the temperatures are a comfortable 24C, and you can still take a dip in the sea!
