Holidays to Dubai

Dubai or not Dubai? Dubai, of course! Sensational skylines, spectacular shopping, ancient architecture and epic experiences – it’s all here and seriously supercharged on a Dubai holiday.

Ski, shop and sleep in the sky

If you find yourself thinking, “I wonder if…” when you’re on a Dubai holiday, best to assume the answer is yes. Everything about Dubai is UAE-xtra.

For starters, it’s got the world’s highest restaurant, tallest building and loftiest hotel room with views above the clouds. Other record-breakers include its flower garden (the world’s largest) and diving pool (the world’s deepest).

Then there’s the gargantuan mall with an underwater zoo, virtual-reality park and VIP valet service. Unbelievably (maybe not at this point), there’s even a snow park and ski slope with resident penguins in the middle of a desert. We really could go on and on.

An Arabian odyssey (with air-con)

Bright lights and big buildings grab the attention in Dubai, but there is plenty here to remind you of the region’s fascinating past too.

To add a little history to your holiday, meander the maze-like streets of Old Dubai and Al Bastakiya (aka the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood). The latter is a literal blast from the not-so-distant past, with history going back to the late 1700s. Wander through buzzing souks, potter about ancient forts and get cosy with traditional Arabian culture without straying too far from the pool, spa and all-inclusive bar.

Adventures the Dubai way

If you want side-splitting fun, the most memorable of memories and the kind of adventure you’ve always dreamed of, you certainly want a Dubai holiday. The city goes BIG on experiences.

Get sand in every nook and cranny with a camel ride or a dune surf; transfer your heart to your mouth on the world's longest urban zipline; and if you’re up for a day trip, you can go hiking (yes, hiking) in Hatta. The grand backdrop of the Hajar Mountains will have you feeling like an ant.

Shop, drop and then shop again

If you always pack an extra bag for your city break, be sure to double it for Dubai. Shopping is serious business here, so you might as well do it properly. The supersized Dubai Mall is home to around 1,200 stores selling everything under the sun (except that it’s safely indoors and air-conditioned). It’s definitely the big cheese of shopping experiences. The heavily discounted Dubai Outlet Mall and the high-fashion Mall of the Emirates are also great bets for unbelievable buys.

Boredom busters for kids big and little

You can’t get bored on a family holiday in Dubai, and that’s a fact! The sensational views from the Burj Khalifa make every jaw drop, while the Wild Wadi Waterpark and the IMG Worlds of Adventure will get hearts racing. Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo will keep your minds whirring too. And did we mention aquarium dives at Aquaventure World, interactive art experiences at the Louvre Abu Dhabi Children’s Museum or class seaside escapades at Kite Beach? Well, now you know!

Shows, cocktails and skylines

Mamma Gump was wrong on both counts. It is, in fact, Dubai’s nightlife that is like a box of chocolates – because there’s something for every taste. If you want an over-the-top experience, head to Adaline for glam dining, live entertainment and masquerade balls in an opulent Jazz Age setting. For luxury vibes, classy cocktails and thumping DJ sets, Alma is a good bet. If it’s a quintessential Dubai kind of thing you’re after, well, ZETA Seventy Seven is as lofty as it sounds.

When to go to Dubai

For a cheap Dubai holiday, hop on a plane in September or October when temperatures are high and hotel prices are low.

Weather-wise, any time between November and February is the sweet spot for swimming in warm waters and exploring without having to wring out your clothes every few minutes (eek).

March and April are good options for this too, but by late May, you’ll find that temperatures are already hovering close to 38C. Avoid the scorching summer heat of June, July and August unless you want to be holed up in your hotel room under the air-con.
