Holidays to Spain

Top-notch beaches by the bucketload, epic party destinations to let loose in, and heaps of sights, sounds and scents to dazzle the senses, it’s hard to beat Spain holidays when it comes to sun-kissed getaways.

Costa del Sunshine

With around 300 days of sunshine a year and plenty of seaside bars and restaurants, cheap Spain holidays are all about the beach. From banana boats in Benidorm and pedalos in Portinatx to cabanas in the Canary Islands, Spain’s sandy shores do not disappoint.

Let's fiesta

Livin’ la vida loca is part of the everyday experience in Spain – and the locals know how to have a good time! Whether it’s flinging tomatoes at La Tomatina or running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain’s festivals make your local carnival look like a town council meeting.

Tapas time

Pack your roomiest muumuu because Spanish cuisine is the stuff of dreams. Manchego cheese, jamon iberico, gazpacho, churros, torrijas… diet? What diet? From a seafood-packed paella in an Ibizan chiringuito to tasty tapas from a backstreet bar in Barcelona, Spanish holidays are not for the timid of appetite.

Flamenco fever

If you’re looking at tight trousers, Cuban heels and the flounciest of dresses, chances are you’ve ended up in a flamenco joint – and your holiday will be all the better for it. Head to the south of Spain to watch performers clap, stomp and whirl around in the tablaos of Seville. Madrid, in the heart of Spain, is another flamenco hotspot.

Real life fairytale castles

Love stepping back in time? Spain is home to some of the oldest palaces and castles in Europe. Explore the Real Alcázar of Seville, which doubled as King's Landing in Game of Thrones, check out the Alhambra Palace in Granada – the backdrop to many a Hollywood movie – and visit the Alcázar of Segovia, the inspiration for Disney’s Cinderella's Castle.

Sun, sand and siestas

With around 8,000km of coastline, it’s fair to say that Spain was made for beach breaks. For an easy win, you can’t go far wrong with flopping on any of the Costa Dorada’s many beaches, from Paella Beach in Torredembarra to Cala Front in Salou. For families, the watersports, boat trips and fishing villages in and around the Costa del Sol are tried-and-tested crowd-pleasers. Meanwhile, the black-sand beaches of Tenerife hit the right note for those looking for a more novel coastal experience.

Cultural GOATS

Some of the greatest artists of all time come from Spain, including Diego Velázquez, Francisco Goya, Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso. See their masterpieces up close in the Prado Museum in Madrid, the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, and the Museu Picasso in Barcelona. Catalonia’s capital is also home to the architectural masterpiece that is La Sagrada Família. Funny thing about this eye-catching Catholic church – over 140 years after the first brick was laid, it’s still not finished!

Family-friendly action

If you like a shot of adrenaline, forget about Disneyland – a Spanish holiday has more thrills than a zombie apocalypse. In Salou, PortAventura World keeps the boredom at bay with rides like Shambhala and the F1-themed Red Force at Ferrari Land. Want to get wet and wild? Aqualandia in Benidorm is a water-themed wonderland. Like getting lost? Laberinto de Horta, a forest park in Barcelona, has a huge maze to take on. In short, kids and kids at heart will be happy here.

When to go to Spain

Sizzling hot summers, mild-mannered springs, and a dusting of powdery snow on the mountains in winter, Spain is the meteorological chameleon of Europe.

While summer is busy, busy, busy, with temperatures rocketing past 30C, this is the best time to visit if you want to do little more than sizzle on the beach and lay by the pool.

For a cheap Spain holiday, hit the beaches in May or October, when the temperatures are moderate to warm. In December and January, forgo the usual frostbite back home and flock to Fuerteventura and the other Canary Islands for some winter sun.
