Holidays to Gran Canaria

Take in tantastic beaches, moody mountain ranges and the cutest of old towns on a holiday to Gran Canaria. This ‘continent in miniature' is like a highlight reel of the best of Europe.

Do it all in a day

Gran Canaria’s scenery is like a bag of Revels: it keeps you guessing. Lounge on sand dunes, wander off into the forest, sip coffee in old colonial towns and hike a volcano or two – all before sitting down to dinner.

You can also become one with nature on a day trip that takes you from the streets of Las Palmas to the pine trees of Tamadaba Natural Park.

Don’t worry, beach happy

With 82 playas, this island is almost entirely beach. Each one as interesting and diverse as the rest of the Canarian landscapes. There’s a wild wave, a quiet cove and a beaming bay here for every kind of beach day. Pack your sunhat and a good dose of courage for Playa de Puerto Rico. Take to the waves on jet skis, the skies on parasails… or the sands on sun loungers.

Unleash your culture vulture canary

Gran Canaria doesn’t just pack almost every European terrain into a relatively tiny island. It jams a load of history in too. Head for the Canarian Museum to get the potted version in a single visit. Prehistoric fossils, ancient bone fragments, primitive tools – the lot.

There’s also the trail of tombs at Maipés Archaeological Park - a lava field containing an ancient burial ground - and the Catedral de Santa Ana & Museo Diocesano de Arte Sacro.

Cities so pretty

Gran Canaria may be known for its incredible beaches, but don’t underestimate its cities - they offer plenty to keep you entertained away from the sand.

Las Palmas is the place to party: rooftop bars, classy cocktail lounges and clubbers a-clubbin until 6am. Try honey rum (ron miel) for an intensely sweet experience while you’re out and about.

Switch da club for something calmer in Telde. Think colonial architecture and old-town charm away from the crowds.

Tis the sea-son all year round

If you’re all about the aesthetics, you’ll want Maspalomas. Smack bang in the middle of a nature reserve, it’s all sweeping sand dunes and perfectly placed palm trees. To sit on the sand not far from the city, try Playa de Las Canteras. Just outside the capital, it’ll keep you busy with snorkel-ready reefs, paddleboards and more than a bar or two. Or do a Houdini and escape it all at Gui Gui. It’s a hike alright, but with the sands almost to yourself, it hardly matters.

A foodie fiesta

Gran Canaria’s island climes and centuries of cultural influences set its delicious dishes apart from the mainland. You’ll want to get your gums around the boiled saltfish, some sancocho stew, and the wrinkly canary potatoes at the very least. For traditional deliciousness, visit Tasca La Lonja in Las Palmas. The octopus in pepper sauce is a firm foodie fave. Kick things up a notch with a Michelin-star meal at Muxgo. And the goat stew is something else – we’re not kidding!

Families that play together slay together

Between beaches and boat trips, boredom doesn’t exist in Gran Canaria. There’s so much here to entertain (tire out) toddlers and teens. Holiday World in Maspalomas steps up to the challenge with rollercoasters, bowling, escape rooms and an F1 simulator for any budding Landos. Not to be outwinged, the Angry Birds Activity centre is all zip-wires, go karts, mini-golf and parkour. Got something left in the tank? A Wild West showdown in Sioux City Park will see to that.

When to go to Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is pretty much as reliable as it gets when it comes to European weather. Drop in any time and you’ll find temps hovering somewhere between 22C and 28C. The best time to visit? Whenever you want!

To soak up the shiniest summer sun, head on over in July and August. Expect clear blue skies, 27 degrees and buckets of sangria. If you want to see the cities as well as the sands, fly out in the shoulder seasons. That’s May to June, or September to October.

For a cheap holiday to Gran Canaria with a chance of getting on the beach, clear a week or two in November.
