Mar Chiquita beach and natural pool on a summers day in Puerto Rico

Holidays to Puerto Rico

On the sunny southern shores of Gran Canaria, Puerto Rico holidays serve up golden beaches, year-round warmth, heaps of activities, family-friendly fun and plenty more. That’s your next holiday sorted!

Winter sun royalty

With year-round sunshine and a fabulous location just 4.5 hours from the UK, it’s no surprise that the Spanish island of Gran Canaria is a popular destination for winter sun getaways.

Puerto Rico, set on the really sunny side of the island (the southwest coast), is one of the best places to stay. Winter is also one of the most affordable times to visit, with plenty of top deals available between November and March.

Beach holiday vibes

With sandy beaches that you can melt away on, bouncy banana boat rides, all the ice cream you can eat, and tip-top hotels that have everything you need, Puerto Rico is as fuss-free and crowd-pleasing as Spanish beach breaks get.

Oh, and the nightlife is the welcome cherry on top. Head to the resort’s centre for your pick of bars, pubs and restaurants.

We are family

Puerto Rico doesn’t do boring, so if you’re travelling with kids, they should have very little to grumble about (but no promises!).

Along with wide sandy beaches and calm, shallow seas, the popular resort is packed with family-friendly attractions for all ages and interests. Beat the kids at mini golf, race around the track on go-karts, meet the meerkats and monkeys at Palmitos Park and enjoy a speedy jet boat ride around the bay.

The motion is in the ocean

From deep sea fishing to dolphin spotting and whale watching, some of the best activities on a Puerto Rico holiday happen at sea.

You’ll find numerous boat tours and cruises departing from the marina, but if you want to snorkel without getting your toes wet, a glass-bottom boat will get you up close and personal with all manner of colourful fish and turtles.

Play all day on those playas

Sweeping around the bay like a smear of smooth peanut butter, Puerto Rico beach is what sun-drenched days were made for. Great for families, there are plenty of sun-loungers and parasols to go around, so kids can flip-flop between building sandcastles and splashing in the sea. Beach cafes, bars and restaurants are mere steps away, for when those calamari and sangria cravings become too much. Just a 15-minute walk away, Playa de Amadores attracts a more grown-up crowd.

Beaches, boats and Angry Birds

With beaches, boat trips and angry birds (more on that in a sec), Puerto Rico holidays are hard to beat when it comes to family getaways. If the kids get bored of the beach (unlikely, but you never know), head to the Angry Birds Activity Park for huge swings, climbing frames, splash zones and a daily foam party. And when the little (and not so little) nippers want even more thrills, the water slides at Aqualand Maspalomas are an easy bus ride away.

Marvellous malls and nightlife

Forget fridge magnets and Toblerones, souvenirs from a Puerto Rico holiday often come in designer shopping bags. And the resort’s malls offer loads of opportunities for retail therapy (and heaps of bars and restaurants too). Packing in 300 stores, Shopping Center Puerto Rico is the OG retail experience here. Europa Centre has lots of spots for late night drinks, live music and karaoke, while the Mogan Mall is home to the biggest dancing fountain in the Canary Islands.

When to go to Puerto Rico

Year-round sun means a year-round destination – Gran Canaria’s Puerto Rico serves up sun-kissed holidays pretty much whenever you want them!

The hottest and busiest time of the year is between June and September, when the mercury shoots up to around 30C, giving you plenty of time to get that summer jolly in.

You can also swap your mug of hot chocolate in front of the fire for a cocktail on the beach with a winter sun getaway. It’s probably the best time to go if you want to bag a cheap Puerto Rico holiday too.
