Holidays to Menorca

Unspoiled beaches, family-friendly resorts and a laid-back vibe, a Menorca holiday is the ice cream sundae of the Balearic islands without all that Ibiza hullabaloo.

It has the beachiest of beaches

White-sand beaches, kid-friendly lagoons and secret bays for skinny dipping, Menorca is the prom queen of Balearic beaches. The island has more than a hundred beautiful coves daisy-chained around its craggy coast. Some have rustic beach bars and chiringuitos, and others have little more than a rock to change behind. The choice is yours!

They call it mellow yellow

Quiet beaches, rural villages and a lo-fi nightlife, a Menorca holiday is the chilled out alternative to the party islands of Ibiza and Majorca. It has a mellow, laidback vibe and is perfect for sultry sunsets that beat the pants off the all-night raves on the other islands. See Menorca in all her natural glory at Albufera des Grau Natural Park, an UNESCO-rated biosphere reserve home to eagles, Egyptian vultures and Hermann’s tortoises.

Twin city slickers

Bookended by the cities of Mahón and Ciutadella, Menorca has plenty of culture to keep your crew happy. In Mahón, Museu de Menorca dives into the island’s history and heritage, and on Isla del Rey, the hospital museum and art centre of the Hauser and Wirth Gallery is a full day of interesting. Over in Ciutadella, the 14th-century cathedral, mediaeval fortress, cute fishing harbour and Placa des Born are the joys of a day trip.

These boots were made for walking

A Menorca holiday is more than slathered Ambre-Solaire on a fly-and-flop getaway. Swap flip flops for hiking boots or your rental Ford Focus for a bicycle and hit the Cami de Cavalls, a scenic path around the entire island. Known as the Horse Path, the 14h-century bridleway stretches some 185 km and passes lighthouses, Talaiotic prehistoric sites and defence towers. It also has fifty-odd beaches for when you need a cooling dip.

Top beaches: Balearic beach babe

Sipping sangria with your toes in the sand? Yes, please! With more than 200 km of coastline and a ton of glorious beaches, a cheap Menorca holiday is perfect for your inner beach bunny. Banked by white-washed houses and bobbing boats, Cala Alcaufar on the southeast coast is a locals’ favourite. And the gin-clear waters of Es Caló Blanc Beach are snorkelling heaven.

Close to bars and shops, the shallow waters of Es Grau Beach are a dream for families. Tiny toes can enjoy a safe dip, while teens can race each other in kayaks or paddle boards.

Food and drink: Let the fun be-gin

Lobster stew, Mahón cheese, sugar-dusted ensaimadas pastries: for a small island, Menorca has a giant appetite. Mahón’s old fishmarket-turned-food hall is the best place to snack on island-cured serrano ham, briny anchovies and local cheeses.

Menorcans take their gin very seriously – and they should, they’ve been perfecting it since the 18th century! Xoriguer Gin is the Big Name in island gin. Book a tour and tasting at the distillery in Mahón. Or try pomada, a gin-laced lemon slushy for a delightful Catalan kick.

Family-friendly: Treasure’s Island

Safe, sandy beaches, turquoise seas and a brace of water parks, Menorca hits all the family holiday must haves. With plenty of loungers, parasols and ice cream stands, Punta Prima and Binibeca are especially geared up for families. For some serious sandcastling head to Son Bou, the longest beach in Menorca.

The Roman ruins of S’Albufera des Grau and the biggest prehistoric settlement in the Balearics, Torre d’en Galmés, are spot on for sparking imaginations. But let’s face it, the kids are more likely to want to ride the Black Hole at AquaCenter water park in Los Delfines.

When to go to Menorca

Like its Balearic buddies, Menorca can sizzle in the summer, with temperatures regularly hitting 30C and more. July and August are peak season when family-friendly resorts like Punta Prima and Cala N Bosch are the domain of sandy toed nippers. For a cheap Menorca holiday, visit in late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to October) when the sun still packs a punch, but the beaches are blissfully uncrowded. If you fancy conquering the Cami de Cavalls, book a Menorca holiday in November or March, when the temperature hovers around 18C, but rain rarely stops play.
