Kefalos Beach on Kos Island, Greece

Holidays to Kefalonia

With bright blue seas, spotless beaches, ancient wonders and sumptuous Greek food, a holiday to Kefalonia is a highlight reel of Greece’s greatest hits.

Mind-bending beach days

Kefalonia’s coastline is a pinch-yourself paradise of beautiful bays and windswept waves with the stunning sands of Myrtos and Makris Gialos delivering unbeatable Ionian Sea beach days.

If you’re a keen wildlife watcher, head for Mounda to turtle spot a la Attenborough. Or for tanning with a twist, pack your beach bags for the Xi Beach, where bright red sands make for an eye-catching Insta backdrop.

Come over all Captain Corelli

Think Kefalonia, think Captain Corelli's Mandolin - the novel-turned-film that sort of put the island on the map but thankfully didn’t turn it into a trashy tourist hotspot. Because Kefalonia is all about the authentic Greek experience!

For a Corelli-esque taste of the island, visit the port town of Sami, pop into Antisamos beach (watch out for the wasps though), and cap it off at the Venetian Lighthouse in Fiskardo - aka the St Tropez of Kefalonia!

Ancient Greece with aircon

In Kefalonia, you can walk the Cyclopean Walls of ancient Krani, pay your respects at Fiskardo’s Roman Cemetery and marvel at the mosaics of Skala’s Roman Villa – and still be back by the pool in time for a sundown dip! The Acropolis of Sami is also well worth a visit, as is the less ancient but still historic Old Vlachata in Sami, a village that was abandoned after the massive 1953 earthquake.

Fun and festivities? Wine not!

Head here in August for the best of the island’s festivities. Honour the Virgin Mary at the Snake Festival in Markopoulo and Arginia to see how the Greeks do it orthodox style. Otherwise, hit up the Robola Wine Festival. Expect to quaff loads of tasty wine (you’ll get plenty for free, too), find yourself slipping into a Kefalonian food coma and then somehow still manage to dance until sunrise.

Mighty grand sand

Myrtos beach, the jewel in Kefalonia’s crown of beachy gems, is a Pantone chart of prettiness. Think bright white stones, tantalisingly turquoise waters and gleaming green forests on wind breaking cliffs. Just fly in and flop out. Fancy getting your snorkel on? Make the trek to Dafnoudi, and - if you’re feeling brave - channel your inner Tom Daley with a dive from the rocks. For boards and bars, head for Makris Gialos.

Yamas please!

Kefalonia’s we-are-what-we-are vibe extends into its food scene. And that largely means authentic Greek food wherever you go. So, enjoy classics in Assos such as the snack riganda (bread, feta and tomatoes done the Kefalonian way), feast on all the cheeses from mizithra to kefalotyri in the capital Argostoli and enjoy super fresh seafood like lobster linguine in Fiscardo. Love wine? Head to Orealios Gaea in the Robola zone, a winery where you can sign up for a tour and a tasting. Then relax with your pick of superior plonk and enjoy the gorgeous backdrop.

Go gaga in the Greek outdoors

Give Kefalonia’s beaches a day off and you won’t regret it. Start off with a tour of Drogarati Cave, where you can find your voice in the crazy acoustics at the Sala of Apotheosis. When you’re done warbling underground, climb closer to the sun at Mt Ainos National Park by taking a trail towards the island’s highest peak. You’ll be greeted with views across the Ionian to the Peloponnese coast that you really odyssey (thank you, we try).

When to go to Kefalonia

The Kefalonian summer is luxuriously long, so you can definitely bag yourself a good deal on either side of the hottest months (May through to September). With temperatures tickling the mid-20s, you’ll have no shortage of tan-topping opportunities.

For a cheap holiday to Kefalonia, consider the off-season between November and March. Highs of 17 may not be classic beach weather, but cooler temps mean you can explore caves, mountains, villages and towns without sweating off your sunscreen.

Or, land in the baklava-sweet spots of April or October for sand-snoozing weather without wallet-worrying prices.
