A clear water bay in Loutro town on Crete island, Greece

Holidays to Crete

With idyllic beaches, jaw-dropping scenery and sumptuous cuisine, Crete holidays are sun-kissed, feel-good, and one hell of a sweet Greek treat.

That’s so beachy!

The largest of all the Greek islands, Crete serves up one blockbuster beach after another. From warm sandy coves to pebbly bays lapped by crystal clear water, there’s a seaside paradise waiting for you.

Picturesque Balos Beach is a frontrunner. With its white sands and turquoise water, it’s basically a postcard for Crete. You’ll need to tackle a challenging dirt road to get here, but it’s so worth the effort.

A historic heavyweight

With around 5,000 years of human history under its belt, it would be madness not to take a look around Crete’s fascinating ancient sites.

Start at the Heraklion Archaeological Museum in the capital Heraklion (aka Iraklio), with its collection of goodies from Neolithic to Roman times. Then pop by the impressive Koules Fortress for panoramic rooftop views.

Get high

Like a leg day? Scenic Crete is begging to be explored on foot. If you’re here between May and October, trek the stunning 18km (11-mile) trail through the Samaria Gorge National Park, which just happens to be a World Biosphere Reserve.

For sea views, hike the clifftop coastal path between fishing villages Paleohora and Sougia. Cool down with a swim in the glittering ocean along the way.

Crete eats

As well as gifting the world democracy, the Olympics and philosophical GOATS, the Greeks dish out mouthwatering cuisine – and Crete does not disappoint on the foodie front.

Cheese pies or kalitsounia (myzithra stuffed in filo pastry) are a fave here, available anywhere and even tastier with a dash of honey. Find cured pork (apaki) in Chania’s restaurants, and traditional lamb dishes in little mountain tavernas. Full? Order a raki. A shot of the digestif will sort you right out for round eight.

Sneak Peek

Best for... Parties and sunny seaside recovery 🎉

Go... In summer for the full Malia experience, or shoulder season for a more relaxed getaway ☀️

You have to... Try the cheese pies (seriously) 🧀

Top beaches: Candyfloss sands and desert islands

Deservedly popular, sandy Ammos Beach in Agios Nikolaos is a top choice for families thanks to its shallow, sheltered waters. In the southwest, it doesn’t get more Insta-friendly than Elafonisi’s Barbie-pink sand. And Frangokastello Beach is not only stunning, it also has a 14th-century castle as a backdrop. Want to get away from it all? The uninhabited Chrissi Island is a 50-minute boat ride from Ierapetra. Think Robinson Crusoe but only the good bits (plus a sun lounger and a smartphone).

Culture and history: Monasteries and mosques

Learn about Byzantines and Venetians at the Historical Museum of Crete in Heraklion, then check out what they built – like Chania’s Venetian harbour with its pastel buildings and tavernas. For local brownie points, visit the 16th-century Arkadi Monastery — a symbol of the island’s fight against Turkish occupation.

Nightlife: What happens on holiday stays on holiday

Malia. Need we say more? The seaside town is famed for its legendary nightlife. Here you’ll find the wildest clubs, from Candy to Apollo. For Crete holidays to remember, you’ll want to spend some time here after the sun goes down. For after-dark adventures with a little less, er, hedonism, consider Stalis (it’s more bar hopping than clubbing). Chania’s port is also lined with loads of bars for a post-dinner cocktail.

When to go to Crete

Surprising no-one, Crete is at its warmest and busiest in July and August. If hot hot heat is your idea of a good time, book away!

Shoulder seasons are fab, too, especially if you want a welcome mix of great (but not too hot) weather and fewer tourists. Sound good? Look for breaks between April and June, and September and early October.

For cheap Crete holidays that will give you a proper taste of what the island has to offer, May is a solid month for a bargain. For an absolute steal, you could go in winter, but you’ll miss out on a lot of what makes Crete such a top destination.
