Koukounaries beach on the island of Skiathos, Sporades, Greece, with emerald shining sea and lush vegetation

Holidays to Skiathos

Hike the forest trails. Sizzle on the shore. Whip across the waves. Or plonk by the pool. Choose your own adventure on holidays to Skiathos.

Trillions of places to top up your tan

The list of reasons to hop on a flight to Skiathos is longer than Homer’s Odyssey. And the small island’s large number of excellent beaches certainly doesn’t hurt.

You can get your tan on in the boat-access-only bays of Lalaria, the Blue-Flag beauty of Koukounaries or beneath the lush greenery of Megalos and Mikros Aselinos. With bucket loads of beaches (around 60 to be imprecise), there’s always room to lay your towel down in Skiathos.

Explore every inch with ease

Greece does a mighty fine line in insanely beautiful islands. But few pack so many highlights into such a small space. Skiathos is just seven miles long and four miles wide, but it gives you a classic old town, Kastro’s medieval castle, the Bourtzi Fortress, Strofilia Lagoon and loads of hiking trails. The island’s small size means you can soak up the sun on the shore, wander the pine forests and peruse the town markets before the sun even thinks about setting.

Take a hike

It’s hard to believe, but the beauty of the beaches is only the amuse-bouche to this island meze. Skiathos packs in an impressive 125 miles (201km) of hiking paths which cross springs and creeks, airfields and boatyards, monasteries and monuments.

Pick up a trail for a leisurely stroll around Skiathos Town or take a pulse-raising trek into the forest. For breathtaking views of the whole island, take Route ST11 from Zorbades to Platanias.

Hop between holidays

Two holidays are better than one. So how about three? It’s easy to boat from Skiathos to a few of its beautiful neighbouring islands. Keep a lookout for dolphins on your way to Skopelos – that’s the other Mamma Mia island to you and me.

Once you’ve meandered in Meryl’s footsteps at the old chapel in Glossa, hop on a boat headed for Alonnisos to oooh your way across white pebble beaches and ahhh your way through the baby-seal rescue centre.

A bay for every day

Skiathos has enough golden sand to turn King Midas green with envy. For an action-packed beach day, head to Koukounaries, where you’ll find heaps of bars, restaurants, and watersports — and miles of shore to sink into. Ahhhh.

On holiday with the kids? Kanapitsa is all shallow waters, beach games and cold cans of pop at the ready. To really earn your beach day, take the track to Glyfoneri - a serene beach strewn with sand and pebbles and surrounded by lush cliffs.

As Greek as Greek food gets

Has anyone told Skiathos that it’s teeming with tourists? Cos its authentic tavernas and local restaurants suggest it may have missed the memo. Maistrali’s got more classics than Sophocles. Head here for moussaka, keftedes, souvlaki. The lot. Agnadio is a top spot for local nosh too. Don’t even think of leaving before trying Greek cheese pie, Tiropita. When you’re ready to show off your new tan, book a table on the harbour front at Bourtzi Skiathos. Breakfast, lunch, dinner – with these views, it doesn’t matter.

There’s always a place to party

If you’re in the mood for dancing, you’re in luck — there are plenty of places to party on Skiathos. Pick an alley near Politexniou or Papadiamanti Street for super chic cocktail bars and more than a few places to sink an ouzo or five. Hakuna Matata and Anderssons will get your night off on the right foot. Over at GinFish, you can hit the dance floor ‘til four and throw shapes by the sea while the sun picks out his hat.

When to go to Skiathos

Skip over to Skiathos in June, July and August for scorching sunshine. We’re talking late 20s, early 30s without so much as a cloudette in the sky. Top-notch tanning weather.

That said, if you’re here to hike, you’ll be sweating like Zeus on chest day. April and October are much more suited for the trails. There’ll be fewer folk to wade through if you want to cool off in the sea too.

For a cheap holiday to Skiathos, hit the shoulder seasons in May or September. With temps in the mid-20s, summer is still in full swing – by British standards at least.
