View of Papagayo bay in Puerto del Carmen, Spain on a clear blue sunny day

Holidays to Puerto del Carmen

Whether you want a fly-and-flop sunshine break, a high-octane trip with plenty of watersports, or a sleep all day and party all night kind of getaway, you’ll find it all on a holiday to Puerto del Carmen.

Days beyond the bays

Sure, Puerto del Carmen’s sandy beaches are made for chilled-out, sun-kissed days, but they’re also your gateway to water-based fun. So take your pick from the boards, bungees and inflatable fruits available to fling, fly or whiz into the sea.

Want to really get your adrenaline pumping? Head for the watersports centre at Marina Rubicon to be jet-skiing, parasailing or banana boating over Lanzarote’s blue waters in no time at all. Or hit Playa Grande to ride the waves on your choice of sails, canoes and kayaks. Feeling more adventurous? Chuck on a tank and scuba your way past sunken ships, volcanic caves and colourful coral.

Unpack some adventure

The fun and frolics on Puerto del Carmen holidays don’t stop at the shoreline – in fact, there are plenty of opportunities to get your heart racing away from the waves.

Book a 4x4 buggy tour to take on the tracks, trails and dusty roads of rural Lanzarote – think Mars-like terrain and spectacular views of the crashing Atlantic – or head out of town to Timanfaya National Park for a spot of volcanic crater walking. And if that’s not quite cool enough, stop off at the nearby El Diablo restaurant for some lunch cooked by lava heat. Yes, really!

Eat, drink and be merry

Whether you like to play it safe with food or wouldn’t flinch if someone served you goose barnacles (a Spanish delicacy), Puerto del Carmen plates up something for all tastes.

You’ll find most of the resort’s restaurants and bars on the beachfront, including Vive Libre (tasty tapas), The Good Old Days Bar & Kitchen (you name it, it’s got it) and Lani’s Gourmet Restaurant (one for the seafood fans). As for drinking holes, you’re never far from one. Footie fan? Pop into the White Lion Sports Bar. Cocktail lover? Head to the Tequila Lounge Bar.

Seas the day!

For an all-in-one beach day, Playa Grande is the place to be – think long lines of sunbeds, bars and cafes, and plenty of watersports. For clear seas with fewer crowds, grab your snorkel and dive into the waters of Playa Chica. Be sure to stick around in the evenings for some sensational sunsets too. If you’ve got the kids in tow on your Puerto del Carmen holiday, then the warm pools and toddler-friendly shallows of Los Pocillos may well be more your scene.

The nighttime is the right time

Puerto del Carmen’s The Strip (or Avenida de las Playas if you want to look good to the locals) is the place to party. Check out Bar El Kiosko for cocktails and cold beer right by the beachfront, as well as La Delicatezza and Café La Ola. Both give beach bar vibes day and night. Fancy a taste of Blighty? Order your favourite bevvy at The Auld Triangle, which also hosts nightly karaoke. There’s no shortage of Irish pubs in Puerto del Carmen either, from Paddy's Point to O Connells Dug Out.

Fam-tastic beach holidays

Head for the calm waters of Chica Beach to snorkel in the shallows, or visit Playa Grande’s off-shore aquapark to overcome a series of inflatable obstacles. Kids a little older? Paracraft Lanzarote, H2O Sports Lanzarote and Aquasport Diving Lanzarote have lots of water-themed activities to try. Away from the Atlantic, Rancho Texas Park has a Dolphinarium, Penguinarium and Reptilarium (the clues are in the names). And because a family that pedals together, er, revels together, why not hire a multi-seater bike to take a tour of the town?

When to go to Puerto del Carmen

Even at its coldest, Lanzarote dishes out temperatures that would have most Brits reaching for the factor 50. So if you’re looking for a mid-winter shot of vitamin D, book a holiday to Puerto del Carmen in the 18C (ish) warmth of December, January or February.

If you prefer the beaches at their tan-topping best, head to the resort in summer, between July and September. At this time of year, temperatures are typically in the mid-to-late 20s, with bargain deals possible outside of the peak summer months of July and August.

On that note, for cheap holidays to Puerto del Carmen, look to touchdown in April, May, October or November. You can expect more space on the beach and fewer queues at the bar – without compromising your tan lines.
