Family Friendly: Sandy beaches, submarines and camels
Puerto Calero holidays are very family-friendly, with attractions and experiences that range from the epic (like a bright yellow submarine deep dive into Lanzarote’s kaleidoscopic marine world) to classic, fuss-free winners. And here we’re talking about beaches. You’ll find Puerto del Carmen’s sands a short hop away, with Playa Chica’s clear, calm waters perfect for little snorkelers. Elsewhere, for a volcanic family adventure with a twist, take a Canarian camel ride at Timanfaya National Park (this isn’t your average family trip!). You and your mini-mes can also get fast and furious behind the wheel of a go-kart at Gran Karting Lanzarote.
Food and drink: Fresh seafood and volcanic vinos
Puerto Calero’s plentiful waterfront cafés and restaurants serve up international dishes (the Bollywood restaurant does curries) and fresh seafood (Amura is Mediterranean-themed). The island is peppered with outstanding contributions by the artist, architect and sculptor. For a taste of history with killer views, check out Castillo de San José, a fortress-turned-art museum in Arrecife. And don’t miss the lively Sunday market in Teguise, where the historic centre buzzes with stalls and live music.
When to go to Puerto Calero
Whenever you want. No, really. Thanks to Lanzarote’s brilliant Canary Island climate, Puerto Calero is blessed with gorgeous weather throughout the year.
If you’re looking for budget-friendly deals, then low season is your season (November to March). It’s also a milder and quieter time to visit the resort. For the best beach weather minus the crowds, plan your Puerto Calero holiday for late spring (April-May) for temperatures close to the mid-20s or early autumn (September-October) to enjoy weather in the late-20s.
The summer months, of course, are a no-brainer, especially if you like your sunshine extra hot and your backdrops extra lively. This is peak season, so expect higher prices and more fellow travellers.
