Ancient fortresses, grand palaces and secret cliff bars… a Dubrovnik holiday is pure medieval fantasy. Just watch out for the dragons.
With its towering medieval walls, ornate 17th-century palaces and polished limestone streets, Dubrovnik is undoubtedly the jewel in the crown of the glittering Dalmatian Coast. Here, it’s all about enjoying gleaming sea views from the city walls, exploring the city’s historical attractions, and listening to live music at a backstreet bar after dark.
Dubrovnik’s Old Town is a proper Hollywood darling (and with its striking looks it’s easy to see why). Big blockbusters like Star Wars: Episode VIII, Robin Hood and Mission: Impossible were all filmed here. Of course, it’s best known as King’s Landing, the capital of Westeros, in the fantasy HBO series Game of Thrones.
When Dubrovnik Old Town becomes too congested, escape through the Pile or Ploče gates and head for the hills. Hike or ride the Dubrovnik cable car (much easier!) up Mount Srđ for jaw-dropping views across the Adriatic Sea and Lokrum Island.
A Dubrovnik holiday isn’t all dungeons and dragons. There’s plenty for the beach bunny in you too. With crystal-clear waters and views of Old Town from every lounger, Banje Beach is the star of the show. Copacabana Beach is the party queen or you can take the 20-minute boat ride to Koločep Island, one of the Elaphiti Islands with sandy beaches and great snorkelling.
Best for... Game of Thrones disciples desperate to do the Walk of Shame 🐉
Go... In October to catch the Good Food Festival 🎉
You have to... Have a sundowner in a hole-in-the-wall bar overlooking the sea 🌊

The best time for a Dubrovnik holiday is between May and June and September and late October, when the sun shines and the Adriatic Sea is bliss for a dip. Plus, there are fewer crowds, so you won’t have to elbow your way through Old Town like it’s Black Friday in King’s Landing.
Avoid July and August unless you love 35C heat and want to share Dubrovnik with half of Europe. A good time to book a cheap Dubrovnik holiday is when winter is coming (or has arrived, really!). The streets are quiet, the hotels cheap and although temperatures rarely rise above 15C, it’s worth it for the peace.
