Holidays to Dubrovnik

Ancient fortresses, grand palaces and secret cliff bars… a Dubrovnik holiday is pure medieval fantasy. Just watch out for the dragons.

Explore its polished Old Town

With its towering medieval walls, ornate 17th-century palaces and polished limestone streets, Dubrovnik is undoubtedly the jewel in the crown of the glittering Dalmatian Coast. Here, it’s all about enjoying gleaming sea views from the city walls, exploring the city’s historical attractions, and listening to live music at a backstreet bar after dark.

(Film) sets and the city

Dubrovnik’s Old Town is a proper Hollywood darling (and with its striking looks it’s easy to see why). Big blockbusters like Star Wars: Episode VIII, Robin Hood and Mission: Impossible were all filmed here. Of course, it’s best known as King’s Landing, the capital of Westeros, in the fantasy HBO series Game of Thrones.

Incredible views of the Dalmatian Coast

When Dubrovnik Old Town becomes too congested, escape through the Pile or Ploče gates and head for the hills. Hike or ride the Dubrovnik cable car (much easier!) up Mount Srđ for jaw-dropping views across the Adriatic Sea and Lokrum Island.

Beach-meets-urban appeal

A Dubrovnik holiday isn’t all dungeons and dragons. There’s plenty for the beach bunny in you too. With crystal-clear waters and views of Old Town from every lounger, Banje Beach is the star of the show. Copacabana Beach is the party queen or you can take the 20-minute boat ride to Koločep Island, one of the Elaphiti Islands with sandy beaches and great snorkelling.

Culture and history: Walk of Fame

Your Dubrovnik holiday is like travelling back to medieval times – minus the risk of catching the bubonic plague! Explore the Franciscan Monastery, visit a 14th-century pharmacy and peek into the Rector’s Palace. Alternatively, take a boat over to Lokrum Island to visit the Game of Thrones exhibition in the monastery. Just follow the queue of fans waiting to sit on the iron throne.

Food and drink: Dining fit for royalty

Dubrovnik loves to eat! Try dirty macaroni, a pasta dish that’s tastier than it sounds (think braised beef, cinnamon and tomatoes). Another Croatian favourite is black risotto, aka crni rižot, a creamy rice cooked with cuttlefish and their ink. Try it at Proto in Old Town. Come in October to catch the Good Food Festival, which dishes up two weeks of tasty events and foodie workshops. The highlight is the Dubrovnik Table event in Stradun, where local chefs showcase their dishes.

Nightlife: From cliff tops to fortresses

It may be small, but boy, is Dubrovnik’s nightlife mighty. Start with a sundowner in the Old Town. Then, from Rudjera Boškovića, follow the Cold Drinks sign to find Buža – the city’s best-known cliff bar for drinks at sunset. The Beer Factory is a great pick for top-notch local brews (it’s got a secret garden too), and if you want to dance ‘til dawn in a 16th-century fortress, Revelin Culture Club is the place.

When to go to Dubrovnik

The best time for a Dubrovnik holiday is between May and June and September and late October, when the sun shines and the Adriatic Sea is bliss for a dip. Plus, there are fewer crowds, so you won’t have to elbow your way through Old Town like it’s Black Friday in King’s Landing.

Avoid July and August unless you love 35C heat and want to share Dubrovnik with half of Europe. A good time to book a cheap Dubrovnik holiday is when winter is coming (or has arrived, really!). The streets are quiet, the hotels cheap and although temperatures rarely rise above 15C, it’s worth it for the peace.
