Tropical beach with blue sky, coconut palm trees, turquoise sea water and shining sun in Cuba

Holidays to Cuba

From vintage Cadillac cruising to Cuba libre-fuelled salsa nights, Cuba holidays are more than just fun in the sun – but that’s guaranteed too!

Heady Havana

Cuba’s capital, Havana, is a must-visit. Where else can you ride around in super cool vintage cars, wander past massive Che Guevara memorials, sling back mojitos in buzzing bars and watch 1950s-throwback cabaret at Tropicana? Only Havana!

Stroll through Old Havana, its narrow streets crammed with eye-catching buildings, crumbling walls and pastel-hued façades. At sunset, mosey on down to the vibey Malecón coastal drive – four-ish miles of sea views, music and mingling locals.

Caribbean cool

Yeah, there’s tons of culture in Cuba, but we’re here for those beaches too! Stay all-inclusive at Cayo Coco to roll from the buffet straight onto some of the island’s best beaches.

If you can tear yourself off the sun lounger, you can dive shipwrecks and coral walls from Playa Girón in the south, or head to the northeastern Guardalavaca beaches for some epic coral reef snorkelling.

West is best

The Caribbean’s biggest island has plenty going on between its beaches. In western Cuba, the Viñales valley is surrounded by massive limestone outcrops – seriously stunning scenery to hike, bike or horse ride.

And if your holiday isn’t complete without a pic of you with a mahoosive Cuban cigar, head to Alejandro Robaina tobacco plantation, Finca el Pinar, to tour the farm and give the goods a good puff.

Cuba libre

Check out Santiago de Cuba’s Moncada barracks, where the Cuban Revolution began in 1953, and Fidel Castro’s tomb in the city’s considerable Santa Ifigenia cemetery. On that (slightly morbid) subject, Che Guevara’s final resting place is his mausoleum in Santa Clara.

It’s not all ¡viva la revolución! Santiago’s big ol’ 18th-century fort overlooks the harbour – giving you views for days! And the city’s cathedral is a masterclass in proper Grand Designs.

Coastal corkers

On the north-central coast, Playa Pilar, neighbour to Cayo Coco, is an absolute stunner, with spectacular sands and waters untouched by noisy watersports. In the southwest, in the infamous Bay of Pigs, Punta Perdiz is your gear-up point for diving or snorkelling along the fantastically fishy coral reef.

And the basically deserted Playa Los Pinos on Cayo Sabinal is proper swoon-worthy – a white-sand beach backed by woods home to wild deer and horses!

Rumba to revolución!

Get stuck in at Havana’s Bellas Artes, stuffed with Cuban and international art, or the palatial Museo de la Revolución, which boasts a massive mirrored hall and fancy-schmancy interiors by Tiffany!

Find the rumba beat with classes or a show in the dance’s birthplace, the artsy town of Matanzas. Or hit up Casa de la Música in Trinidad for live salsa music and expert dancing – the crowds mean you’re in the right place!

All-ages adventures

For shallow, warm sea and all-inclusive hotels with pools and kids’ clubs – plus kayaking, snorkelling, SUPing and waterparks – Varadero is an ace base for the whole clan!

Inland, kids’ll have a scream on Las Terrazas’ ziplines (OK, everyone will). You can hike around here too or take water bikes out on the lake. And you don’t need to skip the iconic Cuba stuff – hands up if your teen wants a classic car profile pic!

When to go to Cuba

Cuba is all about winter sun, with lovely warm, dry weather from December to May. The Christmas/New Year festive season is pricey, so aim for later in January and into February for fine conditions and decent hotel rates.

June to November is hurricane season (peaking in September and October) and not the best time to travel for obvious reasons – but it’s usually only a tad stormy in the afternoons. If you don’t mind that, it can be a good time for cheap Cuba holidays. Fiesta time is 25 to 27 July in celebration of the Cuban Revolution.
