City breaks fit for a king (or queen)

When it’s time for some history, head straight to Prague’s 70,000 square metre castle complex.

Prague Castle is much more than its name suggests. Like a Russian doll, it opens up to reveal St Vitus Cathedral, the presidential palace and colourful centuries-old streets. Climb the 300 steps of the Cathedral’s Great South Tower for incredible views over the city.

Pint of pivo?

Whatever you do in Prague, don’t badmouth beer. Getting happy on the hop juice is a rite of passage out here.

Taste the tipple at its crafty best with a tour of the Strahov Monastery Brewery. Or grab a cheap brewski with a view-ski in Letna Park Beer Garden. Heck, at the Original Beer Spa, you can drink and bathe in the stuff at the same time!

An artistic adventure

Laters, London. Off you pop, Paris. When it comes to Europe’s most artsy city, Prague would like a word. Give public art a chance at the John Lennon Wall and spot Cerny’s creepy Babies sculptures, The Man Hanging Out or the Head of Franz Kafka without so much as setting foot in a museum.

For more traditional masterpieces, head for the National Gallery’s Picassos, Monets and Cézannes. Prefer art by local people? Check out the Convent of Saint Agnes.

Thanks to Prague’s diverse seasons and eclectic event calendar, you can enjoy a totally different experience every time you visit the city.

See in the spring with Prague’s International Music Festival. With opera, orchestras and world-renowned conductors, the event gives off a high society vibe.

Prefer high wire to highbrow? Head to Letni Letna in late August or early September for the International Festival of Contemporary Circus. Visiting in winter? Pop over the Wenceslas Square Christmas Market to get that festive feeling.
