Holidays to Berlin

With a profound history to explore, an uber-hip nightlife scene, an abundance of art, and a gritty charm from top to bottom, Berlin is a stand-out European city break destination.

Cap-tastic city break

Can’t wait to kick off your Berlin holiday? You can reach the German capital from the UK in just under two hours by air. To see the city’s star attractions, book yourself on a free walking tour to tick off the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie and the Berlin Palace while learning about the city’s fascinating history. Do tip.

Then you’re free to squeeze in a coffee fix (try Refugio Café or Five Elephant) or some shopping (Mauerpark Flea Market and Kurfürstendamm). Alternatively, potter about in the green wonderland that is Tiergarten before heading to a beer garden for a drink (try Schleusenkrug or Prater).

Raw 20th-century history

From the dark years of Nazi rule to the Cold War, Berlin doesn’t shy away from the past – and it’s on show outdoors as much as it is indoors. The Berlin Wall Memorial and the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe are both important to see.

To delve deeper into the past, visit the Allied Museum, the Anne Frank Zentrum and the Anti-War Museum. The Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial, a former Stasi prison, is both a memorial and museum.

Europe’s party capital

There is, of course, another side to Berlin: its legendary nightlife. Housed in an old power station and known for its techno music, camera bans and strict but unclear entry policy, Berghain is always worth a shot (dress in black apparently).

If you don’t make the cut (don’t worry, there’s always next time), experience clubbing and artistic expression at Anomalie Art Club, where techno DJs work alongside visual artists.

Elsewhere, the party at Sisyphos – housed in a former dog biscuit factory – begins on Friday and continues, non-stop, until Monday. Or, for a more low-key night out, head to the punky Friedrichshain district for cocktails and food.

Sneak Peek

Culture and history: Architectural bingo

The streets of Berlin are jam-packed with spectacular buildings and landmarks, each with their own fascinating history. Unmissable architecture includes the iconic, 18th-century Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag, where the German parliament sits. Elsewhere, the 17th-century Charlottenburg Palace delivers opulence both inside and out – fitting given that it was once a favourite royal retreat.

Best of the rest: Island full of museums, street full of art

Smack bang in the heart of Berlin, you’ll discover Museum Island. In summary: the Altes Museum is for Greek and Roman history, the Alte Nationalgalerie is for 19th-century paintings, the Bode Museum is for Byzantine art, and the Neues Museum is for Egyptian wonders. Wandering around Berlin, you’ll notice street art everywhere, with works by artists like Shepard Fairey, El Bocho and ROA. The most famous spot, however, is East Side Gallery, which gives you a double dose of history (it’s a graffitied stretch of the Berlin Wall) and art. And at 1,316m (4,318ft) long, there’s a lot to see!

Food and drink: Eat, drink, repeat

If you’re super serious about gastronomy, spend your city break in Berlin diving into the German capital’s exciting cuisine. Highlights include the currywurst – a sausage in a tomatoey spicy sauce, which you can get at CURRY 36. Also on the menu are doner kebabs (try one at Imren Grill) and the fun-to-say kartoffelpuffer (potato pancakes), which you can wolf down at Puffer-Imbiss. For steins, you can’t go wrong with Marcus Bräu or the Bavarian-style Hofbräuhaus.

When to go to Berlin

The short answer? There’s no bad time for a Berlin holiday! Summer is an exceptional time to visit the city, when the beer gardens are buzzing, the clubs are pumping and the sun is sunning. As for the shoulder seasons (March to May and September to October), the city is open for business but with fewer tourist crowds. And then there’s winter. Outside of the festive season (an absolute belter of a time to visit), this is your best bet for cheap Berlin holidays. With lots of attractions keeping you indoors – museums, galleries and the like – you’ll won’t worry about the cold.
