White-sand beach in Mauritius with palm trees and sun-loungers

Holidays to Mauritius

Sugar-white beaches, swaying palms and an ocean the hue of a blue lagoon cocktail… a Mauritius holiday brings paradise to life.

The beach baes

Beaches in Mauritius look like they’ve been drawn by Disney (think palm-fringed white sands and sparkling turquoise waters as far as the eye can see), so locating a tropical paradise on a Mauritius holiday is a breeze! Postcard-perfect Belle Mare is as beautiful as its name implies, while jaw-dropping Le Morne has an underwater ‘waterfall’ that’s best spotted by seaplane.

Wild thing

Unleash your inner Tarzan and explore the wild side of Mauritius! Splash around in the waterfalls of the Black River Gorges National Park and take a hike in La Vallée de Ferney, where you might even spot the uber-rare Mauritius kestrel. And don't miss a trip to Île aux Aigrettes. The lush nature reserve is home to Big Daddy, a century-old Aldabra giant tortoise.

A supermarket sweep

Whether you’re on the hunt for rum, souvenirs or high-street threads, a Mauritius holiday can be the ultimate shopper’s paradise. For a real bargain, hit the colourful markets in Port Louis or Mahébourg, where you can haggle over spices, handbags and all the usual bric-à-brac you really don’t need but very much want.

Creole cuisine and coconuts

Pack an extra pair of stretchy lounge pants – the food in Mauritius is epic! Revel in rougaille Creole, a spicy tomato stew with fish or meat, and tickle your taste buds with spicy gateaux piments made from split peas. And don’t miss bol renversé, a rice, vegetables and meat dish with a savoury sauce that’s served upside down. As they say in Mauritian Creole, bon manze!

Finding Nemo

Grab a snorkel and hit the ocean for your own Finding Nemo live-action movie on your holiday to Mauritius. Surrounded by rich coral reefs, you’ll encounter fish so friendly they’ll photobomb your underwater selfies. Want to dive even deeper? You can even get your PADI certification in Mauritius.

Blissful island beaches

You want beaches? Mauritius has miles and miles and miles of them. On the west coast, Flic-en-Flac is a palm-fringed beauty that boasts spectacular sunsets and coral reefs in its protected lagoon. Instagrammers and boujee beachgoers all head to pretty Belle Mare, while kitesurfing fans can be found on Le Morne on the west coast – arguably the best beach for adrenaline junkies and pro windsurfers.

Dine on dholl puri and rum

Mauritius is home to some of the best Creole grub on the planet – think dholl puri (a lentil flatbread stuffed with vegetable curry), pineapples with chilli salt and steamed boulette dumplings. Authentic street food flavours can be found in the capital Port Louis and the coastal town of Mahébourg. Fancy some rum? Of course you do! Visit the Chamarel rum distillery to learn about and taste the good stuff.

Calling Big Daddy

You may well want to fly and flop on palm-fringed beaches all day, every day. And we wouldn’t hold it against you. But there are tons of cool things to see here too, like the sausage trees in Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Gardens. Oh, and the wildlife in Mauritius is wild. Where else can you see pink pigeons, Mauritian kestrels and a giant century-old tortoise called Big Daddy in one day?

When to go to Mauritius

For winter sun warriors, Mauritius is at its steamy peak between November and April when the highs hit around 30C. But bear in mind that hotels can be a tad pricey in high season.

For cheap Mauritius holidays, visit the island between June and September. It’s winter in the southern hemisphere and island temperatures tend to drop a few degrees (to a still balmy 20-24C). But with less rainfall and lower humidity, this time of year still serves up a great getaway.

Mauritius’s north and west coast resorts tend to be warmer and less windy during our summer (May to September), which is great unless you're a kitesurfer.
