Kotor cruise port surrounded by rocky mountains, trees, and crystal-blue water

Holidays to Montenegro

From scaling spectacular peaks and rafting down rivers to lazing on the beach and strolling through fairytale towns, Montenegro holidays guarantee a banging Balkans break.

Get the blues (in a good way)

Montenegro holidays are super popular in the summer months, and it’s not hard to see why: dappled turquoise seas, sun-splashed shores, picturesque mountain backdrops … need we say more?

A coastal highlight (light being the key part!) is the Blue Grotto in the Bay of Kotor, where the sea-filled cave glows Avatar blue when the light shines through. Swerve the day-trippers and catch the first boat tour in the morning to swim in the otherworldly glowing sea.

An interesting interior

Away from the lovely coastline, Montenegro transforms into a lush wonderland of mountains and valleys. Or, as we like to think of them, epic adventure playgrounds!

Tara Canyon is one of the world’s deepest ravines, with dozens of caves to discover at the base of its sheer cliff faces. White-water rafting is the wildest way to get down, so strap on a helmet and hold on for dear life!

Monastic fantastic

Montenegro has lots of monasteries. And when we say lots, we mean lots. Visit them for their history, of course, but also the epic views – many of Montenegro’s monasteries are located in amazing spots.

A case in point is Ostrog Monastery – a bright white building set in a cave, perfectly flush with the cliff face, high above the Zeta Valley. That’s some serious engineering wizardry! Its shrine contains the 17th-century remains of St Basil and it’s one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the Balkans.

Old Town Road

From fat city walls to blinged-out cathedrals, historic Montenegrin towns are a feast for the eyes. And it’s well worth skipping the beach for a morning of pavement pounding.

Sandwiched between sea and mountains, Kotor’s Old Town bursts at the seams with medieval churches and Venetian palaces, its streets all cobblestones and cats. Walk its bulky fortress walls, which date back as far as the 9th century.

Sneak Peek

Best for... A bit of everything, from beaches to mountains to ancient walled towns. 🏝️ ⛰

Go... In June or September for summer vibes without the crowds. ☀️

You have to... Raft through the Tara Canyon – a proper highlight. 🛶

Top beaches: Adriatic fanatics

Budva’s long, sandy Slovenska Plaža is hopping in the summer! For a change of scenery, scoot over to the nearby pebbly Ploče Beach with its seaside swimming pools, water slides and restaurants. For quieter vibes, try Drobni Pijesak beach between Budva and Petrovac. There’s a little beach bar and crystalline Adriatic waters to enjoy! When you’ve sea-n it all, check out chilled inland beaches like Murići at Lake Skadar.

Culture and history: Monasteries and mausoleums

Mosey along Budva Old Town’s narrow, winding streets, popping into the 7th-century Church of St John with its painting of the Madonna (no, not that one!). Take a breather at the medieval citadel overlooking the town’s terracotta roofs (cue your best “thoughtful gaze” pose). Beyond the cities, the 13th-century Morača Monastery might look basic, but inside it is fresco-fantastic, with more halos than Beyoncé’s hit. And talk about resting places. The mausoleum of mega-popular 19th-century poet and statesman Petar II Petrović Njegoš is located on a mountaintop with sensational views.

Nightlife: Year-round rowdiness

When the weather’s hot, so is Montenegro’s party scene. And Budva is the place to be for clubs and pubs. Open-air Top Hill is legendary – the biggest joint in Budva, it overlooks the city. Expect wild nights of electronic music and crazy lighting. If you’re not visiting in the peak summer months, get yourself to the capital Podgorica where the nightlife doesn’t stop for any season. There’s a bar for everyone, from folk music cafés to basement dance clubs.

When to go to Montenegro

Summer is the busiest time in Montenegro, with Europeans flocking to its beaches, and nightlife in full swing. Aim for June or September when it’s still hot but slightly less crowded. And if you’re in Montenegro to hike, fly in at any time from April until November.

Winter, meanwhile, is all about skiing. The coast can be quite lovely, too, and it’s probably the best time for a cheap Montenegro holiday. But do note that lots of touristy restaurants close for the low season.
