Holidays to Porto

As sweet and rich as the city’s world-famous wine, Porto holidays are all cobblestone miles, hand-painted tiles, crumbling piles and traditional port styles!

City break buzz

A breezy two-hour hop from the UK, a Porto city break is ideal for foodies, families and culture vultures. This enchanting city is small enough to explore over a weekend and has all the essentials: sun, tasty food, delish drinks and a bunch of attractions. And it’s pretty easy on the wallet, too.

So strap on your sensible shoes and wander Porto’s alleyways, passing by big ol’ churches, cool street art, cute cafés and gorgeous azulejo-tiled walls.

ImPORTant information

Porto’s the home of port, so rack ‘em up, give them a try and find your fave! Keep it fresh with a white port, tonic and a bit of mint – a winner with the locals.

Cross the Douro River to Vila Nova de Gaia to visit the port cellars. Cálem, established in 1859, has a little museum for nerding up before a guided tour.

Ribeira rambling

The vibrant waterfront neighbourhood of Ribeira should be at the heart of your Porto mini break. All narrow, cobbled lanes and colourful houses along the Douro River, it’s one of the buzziest spots.

What’s more, it’s home to a bunch of the city’s heavy-hitters, like the Sé, Porto’s giant cathedral, and the impressive Palácio da Bolsa palace. Ribeira’s also a good place to burn a few euros on local ceramics and art before hitting up some bars in the evening.

Atlantic beaches

If you’re staying longer than a weekend and want to explore more of northern Portugal, grab your towel and head to one of the Atlantic-facing beaches along the Costa Verde.

Praia das Sereias (also known as Mermaid Beach – dreamy!) and Madalena are both popular surfing spots. Closer to town, Leça da Palmeira is a hip hangout and ace for bodyboarding and kite-surfing.

Culture and history: So wine-y

Porto has wine running through its veins. Pop over the river to Vila Nova de Gaia’s World of Wine (WOW Porto) to embrace this side of the city. Set aside a day to mosey around all the wine-related museums – the Pink Palace is the destination for rosé – shops and restaurants. You should also take the time to step inside Igreja de São Francisco (the Church of St Francis) to cop an eyeful of floor-to-ceiling baroque extravagance. Otherwise, a lot of Porto’s historic and cultural sites are right there on the streets.

Food and drink: Monster sandwiches

Brekkie in Porto means an espresso and a pastel de nata (Portuguese custard tart). At lunch, take the time to sample the city’s francesinha sarnie, which is made with layers of toasted bread, cheese and meat and drenched in a beery tomato sauce. It’s as lush as it sounds! Vila Nova de Gaia is the place for port sipping, so make sure you head across the river for a drop. Graham’s port lodge is a great pick here, as it boasts a terrace with fab views of Porto and the Dom Luis I Bridge.

Nightlife: Club and grub

When it comes to Porto’s nightlife, it’s all about the Baixa neighbourhood. Start by checking out the bars along Rua Galeria de Paris. Then head to Plano B, open till 6am every weekend, with dance floors for pop and EDM. Afterparty munchies? You can legit grab a McDonald’s here and chalk it up as a cultural experience – the downtown branch is housed in a gorgeous art deco building, complete with a chandelier!

When to go to Porto

If you like your city breaks with a side of sunshine, visit Porto from June to September. Summer’s the busiest time, with loads of festivals and packed beaches.

The shoulder seasons (March to May and late September to October) are ideal for a quieter stay without peak season prices. In autumn, you can watch the grape harvest at Douro Valley wineries. It might rain occasionally, but the weather is still pretty warm at this time of year.

For cheap Porto holidays, winter is the best season. It’s typically chilly and rainy – no winter sun here! – but it’s a good time for browsing museums and art galleries.
