Narrow stairs leading down to the turquoise blue sea

Holidays to Protaras

Stunning golden beaches, fun-filled themed pubs and mouthwatering food. And then there’s the most famous fig tree in the world. A Protaras holiday punches high.

It’s all about beach life

If you’re looking for turquoise waters, rippling golden sands and fun-loving beach bars for your lunchtime piña colada, you’ve come to the right place. With a prime spot on the southeastern coast, Protaras boasts some of the best beaches in Cyprus. Fig Tree Bay is the most famous – named after the 17th-century fig tree – its crystal clear waters are a snorkeller’s paradise.

Food: More than just marvellous meze

From souvlaki to stifado, moussaka to meze, Cypriot food might feel a little familiar. Heavily influenced by Greece – and much of it homegrown and cooked by the resident yiayias (grannies) – Cypriot food demands a big appetite. Protaras’ main strip serves up stacks of charming places to eat. For authentic Cypriot dishes, check out Vangelis Taverna, a time-honoured hotspot for hungry locals.

Nightlife: Fun pubs galore

A magnet for the young-and-fun crowd looking for 24/7 partying, neighbouring Ayia Napa is just a 15-minute drive away. But with its revolving cocktail bars, karaoke clubs and cabaret shows, Protaras is not short of good times either. The resort has its fair share of fun pubs from the Del Boy-themed Fools and Horses Pub and the Rockafellas Sports Bar to themed nights at the Love Boat Bar.

Napa’s natural appeal

Once you’ve completed your Protaras holiday beach bingo, why not check out the resort’s natural side. Sandwiched between Protaras and Ayia Napa, Cape Greco National Forest Park is perfect for a day trip. Hop on a boat from Protaras marina to check out the sea caves, swim in shallow bays and wander along shaded pine forest trails. It’s also home to Napy, the legendary Ayia Napa Monster – and we don’t mean Jagerbomb Dave from Huddersfield!

Things to explore

Top beaches: The Beyoncé of Cyprus beaches

Fig Tree Beach may be the Beyoncé of Protaras beaches, but there are many others that shine just as bright. Promising shallow waters and soft golden sands, Pernera Beach just off Protaras’ main drag, is a firm family favourite. Seeking a quieter spot? Konnos Beach on Cape Greco is well worth ditching the beach bars for. For snorkelling and diving, head to Green Bay Beach, where the crystal clear seas offer a hands-on lesson in marine biology – keep your peepers open for the resident sea turtles.

Culture and history: From stuffed sharks to ghost towns

A Protaras holiday is not always about lounging on the beach. For a real flex, climb the 300 steps to Church of Profitis Elias, a stone church built in the 1980s to replace the 14th-century temple that stood there, with sweeping views of the bay. If you like ancient ships and stuffed sharks, check out the Thalassa Museum of the Sea in Ayia Napa. Fancy a flashback to the 70s? Visit the walled city of Famagusta and its spooky ghost town, Varosha. Abandoned in 1974, this beach resort takes you back in time, with abandoned hotels, ruined shops and empty homes.

Family-friendly: Ancient Greek water slides, anyone?

Thrill rides, water parks and kid-friendly beaches: a Protaras holiday is an easy choice if you have the kids in tow. It’s popular with children of all ages - even if older teens are more tempted by the thrills of Napa down the road. At night, head to Protaras Fun Park to spin on carousels or take a whirl on the Big Wheel. To earn even more parenting points, book a day trip to WaterWorld, an Ancient Greece-themed water park in Ayia Napa.

When to go to Protaras

There’s no shortage of sunshine on a Protaras holiday. Banging out 300 days of sunshine a year, Cyprus is a hot spot for sunseekers. It’s busiest in July and August, when the mercury reaches 35C and hotels and beaches are packed to the rafters. May, June and September are the best months to visit. All promise plenty of sunshine but with quieter beaches and less crowded bars.

For a cheap Protaras holiday visit in October or April. With the sun still shining and the temperatures reaching a delicious 23C to 25C, you can still take that dip in the sea.
