Playa del Cristo in Estepona, Spain, with crystal-clear water on a hot summers day

Holidays to Estepona

With awesome beaches, a charming old town and lots of street art – not to mention that famous Costa del Sol sunshine – Estepona holidays are perfect for trips with the fam, your other half or your bezzie mates.

A dip with the dolphins

With 21km (13 miles) of coastline and more than 300 days of sunshine every year, it’s little wonder Estepona’s best adventures are to be found down by the shore.

When you’re not sunning yourself on golden sands, embark on a dolphin spotting expedition from Puerto Estepona. Once you’re bffs with the bottlenoses, keep your sailor’s hat on with a sunset cruise follow-up.

Colourful street art

There are old towns and then there’s Estepona’s effortlessly charming old quarter, which is made for wonderfully aimless strolls. Expect cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings decorated with oh-so-colourful flower pots and plants. Oh, and San Luis Castle too. It’s kind of hard to miss!

Street art is huge in Estepona and there’s lots to see here. To discover the best pieces, put some time aside for a self-guided murals route tour.

Fore the love of golf

If you’re more plus fours than factor 50, set a (golf) course for Estepona. Head here for a week of ‘ruined walks’ and tee off every day on courses from the mountainous Valle Romano to the glorious coastal greens of Dona Julia.

If you’re only planning a single round, consider Finca Cortesin. An official venue of the Solheim Cup, you can follow in the hack marks of the golfing greats.

Hola to the Costa del Sol-a

Between the beaches, bars and old town charm, Estepona gives you zillions of reasons to stay put. But should you want to stretch your legs, just head along the coast.

To your north is Malaga, the jewel in the Costa del Sol’s crown – think bucketloads of beaches, awesome architecture, rich cultural attractions and a lively bar scene. Head south and you’ll be back in ol’ Blighty (so to speak) in under an hour, making friends with monkeys on the rock of Gibraltar!

You Blue Flag beach beauties!

Whether you like your beaches busy, kid-friendly or unspoiled and secluded, you can take your pick of playas in Estepona. For an all-in-one beach day, try Playa de la Rada. We’re talking 2.4km (1.5 miles) of bright white sand, a world of watersports and a chiringuito or two to keep you fed and watered. For something on the smaller side, head for Playa del Cristo. Loved by locals (so it’s gotta be good), its natural windbreak means wonderfully warm waters.

Serving up sea on a plate

Sardines and anchovies. Prawns and squid. Cod and tuna. There’s so much seafood in Estepona you’ll feel like you're under the sea with Sebastian and friends (who, no doubt, will be trying to do a runner!). Try some of the best at Restaurante El Cortijo. Carnivore? The Grillhouse has more cuts than a butcher’s chopping block. Not hungry? Grab a glass of fine wine at Vinoteca 27, which serves tipples from the old world, new world and just down the road world.

The gorgeous outdoors

The Costa del Sol gets the credit in this neck of the woods, but there’s also plenty more natural beauty away from the bright white bays of the Sunshine Coast. And it doesn’t get more beautiful than Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja Natural Park. Head here to hike, trek and climb your way through glorious greenery beneath the mountains. Take it easy on a wander to spot golden eagles and peregrine falcons. Or swap binoculars for bikes and take to the trails.

When to go to Estepona

If your plan is to tan, get here between June and September. Mid-20s temps and clear blue skies make for plenty of body-bronzing opportunities.

For cheap Estepona holidays, touchdown on the tarmac in the off season between November and March. With temperatures tickling the mid-teens, you’ll not catch a chill but beach days may be a little limited.

If you’re here to swing your clubs or you’re after a bargain break with warm temperatures, book for the shoulder seasons in May or October.
