Holidays to Fuengirola

Home to sweeping golden sands, a palm-lined promenade packed with bars and restaurants, and a pretty old town, Fuengirola is perfect for a fly and flop. But on holidays to Fuengirola, you can also explore the best of the Costa del Sol, from ancient ruins and Roman baths to secluded coves and Arab castles.

Make every day a beach day

You don’t come to a place called the Costa del Sol without planning a day or two at the beach. Fortunately, Fuengirola knows the drill. Its golden sands are lined with comfy sun-loungers, and waiters from the nearby beach bars serve cocktails and snacks directly to your sunbed.

Head to the popular Los Boliches Beach for a classic beach day surrounded by amenities on Blue Flag sands. It’s a more bohemian experience on Carvajal Beach, but in peak season there are still sun-loungers and hip bars (don’t miss the colourful and lively Chiringuito La Cubana). Or, visit Playa del Castillo if you want to barbecue your lunch in a sand-filled boat.

From gold sands to golden oldies

Want to get back to the Spain that existed long before flip-flops and jugs of sangria? Sohail Castle is a great place to start. Spot the 10th-century brick-built battlement from a distance and you’d think you were in Windsor (if not for the beaming sunshine).

The Romans were here too. Because of course they were. Check what they left behind at the Finca del Secretario archaeological site. Ovens, baths, pottery and art – you can have a right old nose!

Beyond the beaches

The fiesta town of Fuengirola gives you plenty of reasons to stay put. But if you want to see a little more of the Costa del Sol, there’s plenty to explore nearby.

Hire a car or hop on the train and head up the coast to arrive at the culture-rich city of Malaga in around half an hour. Visit the Centre Pompidou Malaga or the Picasso Museum to get your fill of arty attractions, explore the city’s Roman ruins, and then grab some tapas in the city’s historic backstreets.

Costa del supper

Fuengirola started life as a small fishing village. And boy, it won’t take long for you to know it. Menus are filled with dishes like skewered sardines cooked on beach barbecues, delicious dogfish, red prawns, rosada (a local speciality), and just about every kind of fried seafood. For a taste of the Med, visit one of Fuengirola’s many elegant chiringuitos dotted along the beach.

In the mood for tapas? Try the Michelin-recommended Charolais in Fuengirola town. You won’t struggle for international cuisine in this destination either: Italian, Indian, Mexican, Thai, Greek and Scandinavian cuisines are all readily available, alongside the good old British fry-up.

Beaches: See palms and carry on

Did someone say Spain’s longest seaside walkway? Yes, we did. The 8km (5 miles) pink-and-white-tile stretch along the Paseo Marítimo Rey de España is built for beach-break-loving Brits. Motorboats, jet-skis, paddleboards. Beach bars and cheerful cafes serving up eggs and chips. Sun-lounger-packed sands. It’s everything you need to relax under the sun on the Costa del Sol.

Party by the port at night

You’ll find Fuengirola’s liveliest night spots by the port. Knock back some favourites from the colossal cocktail list at The Gas Pump, with its view of the palms, and then head to Old Town for a dance as the night wears on. Alternatively, sidle down the side streets to El Mana or Le Retro for some tapas to go with your tipple. Pork scratchings and pickled eggs this is not. The mixologists over at Speakeasy Jazz Club & Cocktails will keep the vibes right until the end of the night.

From apes to adventure playgrounds

With well-stocked Blue Flag beaches and calm waters, the Fuengirola coastline is about as family friendly as it gets. But we all know those little ones will want more. And when they do, BIOPARC has all you need to wear them out. We’re talking the who’s who of the coolest critters in the animal kingdom: chimps, crocs, gorillas, leopards and pythons, to name a few. Fam not a fan of furry friends? Head to Sould Park for bumper cars, carousels and trampolines, open late into the night.

When to go to Fuengirola

If you’re here to sizzle on the sand, touch down between June and September. Mid-20s-plus temperatures are ideal for beach days. And when it tops 30C, the Med’s right there to keep you cool.

For a cheap holiday to Fuengirola, check out the off season between November and March. Flights are generally bargain basement, but you probably won’t need your bucket and spade. Replace beach days with wrapped-up wanders and hot chocolates while the temps are in the low teens.

The sweet spot for a warm discount break is the shoulder seasons in late-April and May or October.
