Overlooking traditional Turkish architecture

Holidays to Istanbul

Bargain-heavy bazaars, chilled-out hammams, stacks of history and the very special magic of simultaneously being in both Europe and Asia – there’s nothing on earth quite like an Istanbul holiday.

City break extraordinaire

With ancient history, world-famous attractions, sumptuous food, and an intoxicating blend of cultures, Istanbul is an unforgettable city break destination. Take the district Beyoğlu. Here you can satisfy your sweet tooth at Karaköy Güllüoğlu, wander about The Museum of Innocence, and indulge in some pampering at Kılıç Ali Paşa Hamam.

Oozing with ancient history

Fancy time-travelling? Well, a tour of Istanbul’s epic landmarks like the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque – all of which are part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site – will transport you into the city’s past. For history you can taste, throw in an afternoon of coffee, Turkish delight or shisha in a traditional café. Later, you could attend an Islamic Sema ceremony to watch the whirling dervishes.

East meets West

Straddling the Bosphorus Strait, Istanbul’s borders stretch across two continents, gifting you a 2FOR1 kind of a holiday! After exploring the big hitters on the European side (mentioned above), sail across the Golden Horn to experience the Asian part of the city. Highlights include the ornate 19th-century Beylerbeyi Palace and Şemsi Paşa Mosque, which was designed by famous Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan.

A haggler’s paradise

Getting lost in the world-famous Grand Bazaar is a rite of passage on any Istanbul holiday. In this heady maze of 5,000-plus shops and stalls, you can haggle over everything from handmade kilim rugs and brass oil lamps to boxes of delicious Turkish delights.

Hit the hammam

You can’t come to Istanbul and not experience the ultimate pamper – and that, ladies and gents, is what you’ll get at a traditional Turkish hammam. Laze in tiled rooms with marble floors and domed ceilings and be soaked, scrubbed and buffed to within an inch of your life. For 16th-century opulence, try the Hagia Sophia Hurrem Sultan Bathhouse in Sultanahmet.

Culture and history: Mosques, mosaics and Medusa

From its mosaic-trimmed mosques, gilded palaces, and churches, to its eastern and western influences, an Istanbul holiday is all about exploring the city’s super unique culture and history. Check out the impressive subterranean Basilica Cistern, which was built in 532 to service the Great Palace – and keep an eye out for the Medusa heads down there. There’s also the Eyüp Sultan Mosque, an important place of worship, and the Patriarchal Church of St George, where a golden wall of icons is the star attraction.

Food and drink: Turkish delights

Small dishes, big flavours, it doesn’t get any better for your belly than plate after plate of Turkish meze. Think baba ganoush, börek (cheese pastry), cacık (similar to tzatziki), dolma (stuffed grape leaves), hummus and, among many other dishes, falafel. Kebabs are also an institution here. Try them at Şehzade Cağ Kebap or Hamdi. Turkish coffee is also very popular in Istanbul. Get your fix at Pierre Loti Café or Mandabatmaz. Meanwhile, candy lovers can treat themselves to Turkish delight and baklava at Hafiz Mustafa, a tea salon in Sultanahmet that has been fuelling Istanbulites' sugar cravings for 150 years.

Shopping: Tap, tap, tap

If a holiday isn’t complete without a bit of retail therapy (we get it, we totally get it), an Istanbul city break won’t disappoint. It’s time to let your inner shopaholic loose! Like a bargain? Head to the Grand Bazaar for a spot of haggling. Love antiques? Pop your head into the Cucurcuma district to snap up things you didn’t know you needed. On the hunt for big-name brands? Visit the upmarket neighbourhood of Nişantaşı.

When to go to Istanbul

In summer, Istanbul is hot and busy. But neither of these is a deal-breaker if you’re after a ton of vitamin D and a summer getaway.

One of the best times to enjoy an Istanbul holiday outside peak season is in spring (April to June), when temperatures are balmy, the city is in full bloom and tourists aren’t as plentiful. Autumn is also another good time to visit.

For cheap Istanbul holidays, come between November and February. At this time of year, the city is colder and wetter, but not quite as cold and wet as it’ll be back home.
