Holidays to Florida

Gator-filled glades, world-famous theme parks, bouncing nightlife and plenty of beaches – go with the Flo on your holidays to Florida and you won’t be disappointed.

Work on your white knuckles

Disney may be the daddy out here, but it’s by no means the only show in town. Look beyond the iconic Walt Disney World Resort, and you’ll find Busch Gardens with its animal-themed coasters and continent-spanning safaris. Tour Africa, Asia and Australia and pop into Polynesia without a single stamp in your passport.

Or, for a lava-ly day out, climb, fling, fly and plunge your way around Universal Orlando’s Volcano Bay.

Make some new friends

Florida is the perfect place to release your social butterfly. You’ll be in good company among the gazillions of birds, snakes and reptiles that lay their hats in the ‘glades. Probs best not to shake hands with the locals though – the crocs can be a little snappy.

Head to Apalachicola National Forest if you put hiking boots above flip flops on your packing list. With over 60,000 acres of forests, lakes and swampland, those boots could get a solid workout.

There’s a party in the USA

Change your name to Veruca Salt – you’re about to be spoiled! Head to Miami’s artsy Wynwood warehouses for club nights, karaoke and comedy or join the cool crowd on Orlando’s rooftop terraces.

If you’ve got the stamina for strange-sounding bars, why not take on Key West’s legendary Duval Crawl? You can sink a swift one at Sloppy Joe’s, hit the top shelf at Hog’s Breath and maybe find your favourite tipple at Trolleyed Tourist. OK, that last one might be made up.

B-E-A-utiful beaches

With over 800 miles of coastline, tropical temps and warming waves, Florida holidays are built around the beach. The only tough part of your day out here is deciding which one to sizzle on. Will it be the spectacular shores and delightfully still waters of Fort Zachary Taylor Historic Park in the Florida Keys? Or perhaps you’ll discover some 18th-century loot on the Treasure Coast? Blackbeard eat your heart out!

Did someone say white sands?

People-watching is a noble pastime, and there are few better places to do it than SoBe (that’s South Beach to us tourists). When you’re done basking in the sun, hit the tempting turquoise waters to posture on a paddleboard. It’s the place to SoBe seen!

Hitting the beach with the whole brood? Pensacola is much better set up for family fun. Out to sea, there’s dolphin spotting, snorkelling and kid-friendly kayaks. Back on dry land, it’s all amusements, zip lines and go-karts.

Disney and co are calling

It won’t come as a shock that Mickey’s kind of a big deal around here. Grab your Magic Ticket and head for the place where it all began: Disney’s Magic Kingdom Park. It packs in all the classics, and you’ll meet Dumbo, Ariel and Mickey and Minnie (to name a few) among the thrilling rides and unforgettable theatre shows.

That Magic Ticket we mentioned? It’ll get you into Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom and Epcot too. If that doesn’t get everyone in the fam excited, we don’t know what will.

Get lost in the great outdoors

There was a Florida long before Mr and Mrs Mouse rocked into town. And there’s plenty out here to remind you of that. Take a tram tour of Everglades National Park to get up close and personal with the gators. Or stick to the trails on foot or bike for a laidback way to get your heart pumping.

Get some more heat on your hiking boots at Myakka River, the granddaddy of Florida’s state parks. With over 40 miles of winding wilderness trails, is this actually the Most Magical Place on Earth?

When to go to Florida

At first glance, the 30-plus temperatures of June, July and August look more than a little tempting. But it’s not all sunshine and lollipops. Florida’s sub-tropical climes mean high humidity, a sweat-soaked holiday wardrobe and aircon dependency. Book your break between October and May instead, when the weather’s warm, dry and delicious.

For a cheap holiday to Florida, fly in May or September. Shoulder season gives you 26C, fewer fellow tourists and more coins left for the Disney wishing fountains.
