Holidays to Las Vegas

Bond-style casinos, million-dollar shows from pop icons and jaw-dropping buffets, a Las Vegas holiday means one thing: decadence.

Hit the jackpot

On your Las Vegas holiday, wear your luckiest pants as you spin the Wheel of Fortune, roll a pair of snake eyes or put it all on red on the roulette table. Maybe your game is baccarat or blackjack, poker or pai gow: you’ll find them all in the 24-hour casinos on a Las Vegas city break.

It’s showtime!

From Cirque du Soleil to David Copperfield and Celine Dion to Elton John, spectacular shows are all part of the Las Vegas holiday experience. Crowned the entertainment capital of the world, Vegas is as much about giggles at Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club as it is worshipping at the temple of Mariah Carey.

Land on Planet Buffet

Go big or go hungry – you’ve never seen food quite like Vegas food. The birthplace of all-you-can-eat buffets and bottomless brunches, Las Vegas is legendary for dining out. On a Las Vegas holiday, buffets are feasts of epic proportions, from the mountains of snow crab and lobster at The Palms to Champagne and oysters at the Cosmopolitan.

Putting the art in des-art

Step away from the craps table and you’ll find plenty of culture to explore. Even on a cheap Las Vegas holiday, you can visit (real) Picassos at the Bellagio, play the classics at the Pinball Hall of Fame museum and see the Viva Vision Light Show on Fremont Street. And if all else fails, learn the tricks of the trade at The Mob Museum.

Grand Day Out

Make like a mobster and get the heck outta Dodge. Go for a hike through Red Rock Canyon, see the ancient carvings in the Valley of Fire, and visit Nelson Ghost Town, with its abandoned gold mine. Alternatively, you could splash the cash on a once-in-a-lifetime flight over the Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon.

Nightlife: Let’s get this party started

Sleep is for the weak on a Las Vegas holiday. Go seamlessly from daytime pool parties to all-night dance clubs and everything in between. Sip on sunset cocktails in the Skyfall Lounge at the Delano or cool down with an icy vodka in a Minus5 Ice Bar in the Venetian, Mandalay Bay or LINQ.

Don’t forget to pack those disco-dancing shoes – Vegas has some of the best clubs in the US. After dark, hit up TAO at the Venetian, which attracts a loyal celebrity crowd. Remember, Hangover experiences happen on even the most innocent Las Vegas holiday.

Food and drink: Starry starry night

A Las Vegas holiday twinkles with Michelin stars. Joël Robuchon at MGM Grand serves up exquisite French cuisine, while acclaimed New York offshoot Le Cirque brings a Vegas-style circus vibe to the Bellagio.

As for celebrity chefs… José Andrés plates up meat, meat and more meat at his Bazaar Meat at Sahara Las Vegas. Or you can dine out, family style, at The Bedford by Martha Stewart.

Best of the rest: Hit the desert

For cheap thrills away from the blackjack tables, head for the desert. Red Rock Canyon is less than 30 minutes’ drive from Caesar’s Palace. With its giant rock formations and hiking trails, it’s like landing on Mars. Or go full Total Recall and head to the Valley of Fire State Park, an hour north of Vegas, for Aztec sandstone rocks and ancient rock drawings.

For the ultimate Las Vegas adventure, spend your roulette winnings on a hair-raising helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon.

When to go to Las Vegas

If you want to strut down the Strip in your shorts and t-shirt, book a Las Vegas holiday in spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November).

With plenty of sunshine and desert temperatures hovering around 25C, these shoulder seasons are more than balmy enough for us Brits. It’s also convention season, so expect crowds and pricier hotels.

For cheap Las Vegas holidays, take a gamble on Sin City in the summer when the Strip turns into a giant 40C hair dryer. You can also find a bargain in winter when temperatures drop to an almost frosty 15C.
