Sorrento, Italy coastline on a sunny day

Holidays to Sorrento

Days spent lazing on beautiful beaches, nights dining by the Med and lemons the size of your head everywhere you go – you must be on a holiday to Sorrento.

Find peace in the piazza

Charming courtyards, pedestrian-only piazzas and an all-round OMG old town, this is the laid-back Italian life mamma told you about.

Taste your way around the trattorias of the Piazza Tasso Stanley Tucci-style or pick a fave and plonk down for some elite-level people-watching. To souvenir shop like you’ve never souvenir shopped before, make your way to Corso Italia. Expect limoncello gift sets, lemon-shaped magnets and lemon ceramics. Lemons. Expect A LOT of lemons.

Hit the road

There’s an argument that the Sorrentine Peninsula is one of the most beautiful coastlines in the world. And we’re not here to disagree.

Hop in a cab, hire a car, walk or cycle, it doesn’t really matter. You just need to take on its hairiest of hairpins – it’s all about the journey beneath the cliffside groves here. When it’s time for a rest, wander the brightly coloured houses of Marina Grande or book a clifftop table in Sant'Agnello.

Day trippers delight

Hold onto your coppola (the Sicilian flat cap, not the legendary director) because there’s plenty more to explore beyond the coastline, too. Rome, Naples, Capri, they’re all just a day trip away by road, rail or sea.

Meaning you could be drinking coffee in the Colosseum one day and hiking Mount Vesuvius the next. And for some restorative time, served up by none other than Mother Nature, take a boat trip to the thermal waters of Ischia to put a (hot) spring in your step.

Fin-tastic days beneath the waves

Sure, you’ll come here for Sorrento’s beaches, but make sure you find the time to look beneath the waves – the sea is nothing short of a show-off. Its bluey green hues would take your breath away if you weren’t strapped to an oxygen tank.

Whether you hit up Capo di Sorrento, Punta Campanella or Punta di Montalto, expect to hang out with barracudas, yellow sponges and maybe even an octopus or two.

Top Beaches: Who doesn’t love a little drama?

Picture a stunning Italian beach and you’re looking at Sorrento. All bright blue waters and dramatic cliff-edge backdrops that would make the late Federico Fellini proud.

Now up it a notch. That’s the Baths of Queen Giovanna. It’ll take a little trek to get here but when you’re drifting under the archway into this natural pool, well, talk about a fine payoff. For cafes, cocktails and convenience, head for Marina del Cantone. It’s got bars, sun loungers and stunning Sorrento scenery as standard.

Culture and history: Pompeii? You heard!

There’s plenty in Sorrento that can be filed under “I” for insane historic sites you’ve only ever seen in a book. Try the 11th-century Basilica of Sant’Antonino to get you started and maybe follow up with the baroque-ing cloisters of San Francesco.

But to open up an “O” folder for OMG really, UNESC-go up the coast for a hattrick of World Heritage Sites. That’s the preposterously preserved Pompeii, Herculaneum and Villa Oplontis. How’s the history lesson going? Sorrento far, Sorrento good!

Food and drink: Just like nonna used to make

Pavarotti. The Alfa Romeo. Pasta. Pizza. There’s no beating the Italian classics. Eat one (food that is, not an opera singer or car) by the metre at Pizza a Metro, built from scratch and baked in an oven bigger than Luciano’s tux.

Over at La Tradizione, the pasta’s just as fresh but not nearly as long. Try it alla Genovese and they’ll accept you as an honorary Neapolitan. Wherever you are, sip a Campania white wine while you eat and a limoncello shot when you finish – made with local lemons, of course!

When to go to Sorrento

Like Michelangelo’s David or da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, Sorrento is beautiful whatever the weather. If you’re here for the beaches, June to August will see you right. Think temps in the mid-20s and no danger of ever needing a brolly.

For a cheap holiday to Sorrento, look to the low season between January and March. Even the hardiest of Brits wouldn’t consider this beach weather, but a bit of rain can’t dampen a bargain break exploring the Sorrentine Peninsula.

Need everything just right? Alright Goldilocks, head here in May or September for wallet-friendly wandering while the sun’s got its hat on.
