Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Holidays to Thailand

There’s never a bad thai-me to visit the Land of Smiles. World-beating beaches, incredible culture, next-level partying and mouth-watering food are all coming right up on a holiday to Thailand!

Pure shores

Thailand has a LOT of beaches. The south of Thailand is a tropical heaven, with towering cliffs, palm-fringed beaches and unforgettable sunsets galore.

Check out the peaceful swathes of white sand on Koh Rok island or go for the full-on full moon partays in Koh Phangan. During the day, grab a snorkel and jump right into Phuket’s warm waters, or work towards a diving qualification – it’s crazy cheap to learn here!

Delicious dining

Pad Thai with juicy prawns, refreshing papaya salads, hot-hot green curries, fresh ripe mangos – yeah, we’re drooling too. Wherever you venture in Thailand, the food is divine and super budget-friendly, but Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Hua Hin go the extra culinary mile.

North Thailand does a good line in pork dishes, and down south, seafood and rice noodles are a big deal.

What wat?

There were 40,000-plus wats (temples) in Thailand at last count. You’ll stumble upon them everywhere, from hidden side-street temples to eye-catching constructions that dominate the surrounding landscape.

They stretch through time, from Chiang Mai’s 14th-century temple, Wat Chiang Man, to the modern artwork that is Wat Pha Sorn Kaew’s mountain compound, which was finished in 2004. Check out the 46m (151ft) reclining Buddha at Wat Pho, and get the Buddha’s life story in pictures at Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaew.

Party all night

Thailand throws a great party. From the famous full moon parties on the beautiful island of Koh Phangan to Bangkok’s legendary Khaosan Road, it’s easy to find places where the Singha beers are in full flow!

Phuket’s Bangla Road jumps with go-go bars, beach clubs, cabaret and live music. Or get dolled up in the capital city and hunt out a swanky rooftop bar like Sky Beach with its insane cocktails and 360-degree views of Bangkok.

Beaches to chill and thrill

Thailand holidays revolve around the beach – but which should you pick? Ko Samui has a chilled-out party scene, or you can hop over to Krabi for epic views of limestone karsts above the turquoise water. A long-tail boat cruise around Koh Phi Phi (famously featured in Leonardo DiCaprio film The Beach) is the essential Thailand, or if you’re visiting when the moon’s at its fullest, head to Koh Phangan’s Haad Rin to party the night (and the morning) away.

All watted out

If you get to the end of the wats (40,000? It could happen!), there are plenty of other cultural highlights to explore. Bangkok’s Grand Palace complex, built in 1782, is well worth a morning’s wander. North of Bangkok, you can stroll around the ruins of ancient towns at Sukhothai Historical Park, and get a masterclass in over-the-top maximalist style at Chiang Mai’s Wat Phra Singh (OK, it’s a wat, but it’s truly something else).

Fresh and fabulous food

From street stall dumplings to posh pad Thai in a fancy restaurant, Thai food is utterly delish. Bangkok is proper foodie heaven, whether you’re sampling from the steaming woks at Yaowarat Night Market or indulging at top restaurants like Baan. And while salads might not be your usual holiday grub, Thai salads with papaya or mango or spicy minced meat and mint are on a different level (trust us)! For pud? Sticky mango rice for the win!

When to go to Thailand

December to April is Thailand’s dry season, so this is the best time of year for a beach holiday. What’s more, some World Heritage spots are only open to the public at this time of year. If you’re looking for cheap Thailand holidays, you’re better off avoiding Christmas and Easter.

April can be scorchio – we’re talking high 30s and very sticky – so if you’re not built for heat, it’s a strong no. Thailand gets very wet from May to October when monsoon rains typically fall for a couple of hours every afternoon (luckily, it’s usually right around siesta time).
