Traditional long-tail boats floating on the tropical turquoise lagoon

Holidays to Phuket

Fly straight into paradise on a holiday to Phuket. Awe-inspiring cultural sights, otherworldly beaches and bouncing nightlife await!

A world beneath the waves

Phuket’s beaches take your breath away… but you can get it back with a scuba tank! Drop off a boat into the waters at Koh Racha Yai (a stunning neighbouring island) to float by coral gardens, explore sunken wrecks and wave at barracudas.

For bigger fish, head for Shark Point (the name gives it away). Descend to its corals to meet leopard sharks, blacktip reef sharks, turtles, moray eels and clownfish.

Give in to temple-tation

Hold on to your hat, Indiana Jones-style, for a temple run through Phuket’s most sacred sites. The striking Wat Chalong is the island’s most visited temple for a reason. Expect pristine gardens, gleaming gold statues and a sacred splinter of bone from the Buddha.

Live the Thai life

Not content with being a textbook vision of island loveliness, Phuket makes it easy to pop off on plenty more idyllic escapes. It’s a little over an hour by boat to Ko Phi Phi, famed for its limestone cliffs and aquamarine waters, as well as its lively bar scene.

For aqua-based adventure, head to Phang Nga Bay to kayak its caves and coastline. If you prefer your tropics a little more peaceful, escape to the Surin Islands. This dreamy five-island archipelago is a top snorkelling location.

Wander on the wild side

Don’t let the brightly lit bars, luxurious resorts and busy city centre fool you – Phuket still has a foot in the jungle. Take a trip to Khao Sok National Park, a few hours north of the island, to embark on a jungle trek, explore ethereal caves and go kayaking, before spending the night in a floating bungalow.

To really unleash your inner Attenborough, take a night safari deep into the jungle to vibe with vipers, lock eyes with lemurs and shake hands with slow loris (okay, you can give them a wave at best).

Thai-m to hit the beach!

With over 30 beautiful beaches on Phuket, all offering a slightly different experience, it’s easy to find your very own version of paradise here. Patong is the place for party people. All beat-dropping DJs, beach bars and bronzing bodies. For a serene snooze by the shore, head for Bang Tao. It’s not far from the tourist track. But the sheer size of its shoreline means you’ll soon find a secluded spot. Or, if you’re flying in with the fam, hit the golden sands of Kata for beach games and watersports.

Say what?

With over 40 temples, it’s going to be tricky to see every sacred site in Phuket. So choose wisely. Why not start with Wat Sri Sunthon? You’ll know you’ve arrived when you spot the enormous golden Reclining Buddha. In Phuket old town, the bamboo cups of the Chinese temple Jui Tui Shrine will reveal your fortune if you shake them long enough. And it’ll be written in Thai. So, unless you’ve been hammering Duolingo, it says whatever you want it to.

Dancing in the moonlight

After a day of sightseeing, it’s time to go out on the tiles. If you’re in the mood to party, start with an eye-opening stroll down Bangla Road. Street performers, live music, cocktail lounges, all-night bars. It’s got the lot. Dreaming of dancing on the sand? Kick off your flip-flops at Paradise Beach Club. Or, if you want to really tear it up, visit Phuket in time for a full moon, half moon or new moon party. Or, go for the edgy exclusivity of Illuzion Phuket, which hosts some of the most famous DJs in the world.

When to go to Phuket

Phuket’s beaches are at their best in the depths of the British winter. If you like temps topping 26C, why not spend Christmas soaking up some festive sun?

Can’t miss Christmas with the in-laws? Fret not. Phuket’s average daytime temps stick around the early 30s for most of the year, meaning you can usually hit the beach at any point from November through to April.

Cheap holidays to Phuket are on offer in the rainy season, between May and October. But it’s not all cats and dogs. Downpours are usually severe, short and bookended by 30-degree sunshine.
