Sandy dunes, palm trees and the Great pyramid of Giza, Egypt

Holidays to Egypt

Get your calculator out and punch this in: buzzing cities + ancient wonders + serene beaches. What do you get? Yep. It’s holidays to Egypt.

Staggering landscapes

Much of Egypt’s magic hinges on the majestic Nile. Its fertile valley bustles with brilliant towns to mooch around, and when you’re feeling the heat, kick back, have a drink and cruise the river.

From awesome oases to sweeping sandscapes, deserts make up the vast majority of Egypt’s landmass. But those deserts are hardly deserted. In them you’ll discover awe-inspiring ancient temples, fortresses, captivating colours and the alluring buzz of life in the unlikeliest places. So get among it.

Step back in time

Have you ever felt the full-on stimulation of a souk? Ever gazed at grand structures, pushing your mind to imagine life 6,000 years ago? Ever snorkelled above a coral reef with multicoloured fish swimming around you? If your answer to any of these is “no”, our answer is: “You should.”

Cheap Egypt holidays span the country’s melting-pot of tantalising traditions and emerging influences. The ever-friendly locals bubble with pride, and rightly so. Few places have a richer, more remarkable history. Travel back in time with iconic pyramids and Luxor’s mind-blowing temples and tombs.

P.S. Unless you quit work to become an Egyptologist (we’ve all been tempted) and move here forever, it’s best to book a tour of these ancient wonders.

Egypt: an activity haven

Look, you’ll head into the museums. It’s inevitable (even if just for some AC). But there’s far more to do on your Egyptian hols, like climbing onto a camel’s back or hanging onto a dune buggy for dear life!

And then there’s the hell-yeah watersports: kitesurfing, windsurfing, world-class diving, banana boating, sailing, parasailing and some truly epic waterparks.

If you don’t mind dragging yourself out of bed at an ungodly hour, a proper once-in-a-lifetime moment and Insta-winner is a dawn ride in a hot-air balloon. Wowee! Honestly, Egypt is jam-packed with must-dos. Over to you for the tough choices.

Food and drink

Love food? You’re covered. Egypt holidays are full of top-notch falafel, impossibly aromatic stews and new-age twists on delicious staples from grape leaves to seared lamb chops. Tuck into the splendours of homemade Bedouin cuisine, with roast veggies and the world’s juiciest kebabs (that’s not independently verified but trust us on this one). And don’t get us started on the bread. It sits fluffy, crispy and warm next to every heavenly meal. The smell alone is an intoxicating madness. Then there are those Egyptian dates – sweet glory be!

Top beaches

Stunning water all year round? No joke! Shake off your swimwear for the shallow tides and eye-popping coral gardens. Grab a snorkel or grab an oxygen tank and dive deep.We love Egypt’s beaches, from Red Sea resorts in Sharm El-Sheikh (Ras Um Sid is pure tranquillity) to the fascinating Soma Bay. You’ll have a Cheshire-cat grin on your face till Christmas after swimming with colourful fish, turtles and spotting dolphins playing in the waves.

Shopping

From Cairo’s centuries-old Khan El-Khalili to Luxor’s suite of souks, immerse yourself in the twisty-turny bazaars stacked with crafts, perfumes and intricate glasswork. Sift through textiles and rugs and ask yourself the all-important question: Is your lounge-room floor long overdue some pizazz? The jewellery’s a treat too, with lush amulets and beautiful signature pieces. Fancy an outlandish impulse purchase? Who doesn’t? Just remember, haggling isn’t a shouting contest — it’s an artform founded on respect and value. Just saying.

When to go to Egypt

Honestly, whenever it tickles your fancy. Egypt’s a year-round attraction, but July and August are searing. Like, seriously hot. Suncream, hat, done.

The sweet-spot shoulder season months are March, April and October. Great times to lounge on the shore and visit the museums, temples and tombs. These months are a bit cheaper too. November to February are milder still but a bit busier. Check when sandstorms could cause a problem and look up Ramadan dates — there may be fewer services and altered opening hours, but the vibes are next level.
