Holidays to Calpe

Fun, sunned and rarely outdone, Calpe holidays offer something for every holidaymaker. This classic Spanish destination on the Costa Blanca serves up gorgeous Blue Flag beaches and adrenaline-pumping watersports, as well as spectacular mountain hikes and ancient architecture.

Water way to spend your days

Calpe holidays give you a double-digit choice of playas for your pleasure. Just think, you can lounge on the expansive golden sands of Arenal-Bol one day, and escape the crowds with a trip to pebbly Cala El Raco the next.

But while there’s certainly an eclectic selection of sands, it’s the waves that’ll really keep you guessing. Take to the coves, cliffs and coolest spots of the Costa Blanca by cruiser, catamaran or jet-ski to see the best of these shores from the seas.

What have the Romans ever done for us?

Provided a good chunk of the world’s tourist attractions, that’s what! While you’re in Calpe, check out the Baños de la Reina (Queen's Baths), a Roman archaeological site that dates back around two millennia.

Here you can see the architectural remains of a Roman villa and view the sea pools of the Muntanyeta Thermal Complex. Bring your snorkel to see what the modern-day minnows make of it. For more contemporary culture, check out the 15th-century turrets on Torreó de la Peça.

Sup like a Spaniard

The residents of the seas around Costa Blanca are nothing if not delicious (yeah, we went there!). Whether fried, stewed, salted or served with rice, expect to eat a lot of fishes in a lot of little dishes.

Try not to blush when you dig into the local favourite, the ‘Naked Paella’ (arròz del senyoret). It’s conveniently free from shells and bones is all. It’s at its best, along with a load more Andalusian classics, at Restaurante El Andaluz.

Culture along the cobbles

All winding alleyways, oh-so-charming cobbled streets and ancient city walls, Calpe’s Old Town has a fairytale quality to it. Climb the picturesque steps that are painted with the colours of the Spanish flag, explore the street art and installations, and wander the walls.

If you’re a fan of M&Ms (that’s mosaic murals btw), take a tour around the historic neighbourhood, camera first.

Top Beaches: Beautiful bays every which way

For a classic Costa Blanca beach day, head to the bay that’s so nice they named it twice. Playa De la Fossa, aka Levante Beach, is easy to spot. Right under the Rock of Ifach, it’s a Blue Flag beauty with crystal-clear waters and more than a smattering of sun-loungers. If your perfect beach day is more castaway than crowded sands, you’ll want Cala Manzanera. With amazing architecture and dramatic cliffs overlooking the bay, there’s a lotta beauty in both directions.

Family-friendly: Flamingos and fillies

Calpe’s sands make for great family beach days, but this relaxing destination has got you covered when it comes to other kid-friendly activities too. Ask any kid, flamingos are objectively the world’s coolest animals. Confirm this for yourself at Les Saline, a salty lagoon that’s popular with the pink-feathered preeners. Or, head to Club Hippo and your brood can hop on horseback, John Wayne-style, through forests and mountain foothills!

Best of the rest: Delights at heights

The Rock of Ifach looms large over Calpe and looks mighty lovely doing it. But for the best views of the Costa Blanca, you’ll need to climb it. Ok, so you could get the bus, but where’s the fun in that? Expect nesting birds, beautiful botanicals and bright white coastline as far as your little eyes can see. If Ifach’s 332m (1,089ft) stature seems small fry (check you out), tower over it from the 587m (1,926ft) peak of Monte Oltá. Much like your love, Calpe keeps lifting you higher and higher.

When to go to Calpe

If you’re touching down in Calpe for fun in the sun, hop on a flight between June and September. Temperatures peak in July but you can expect mid-to-high 20s right through the summer.

Cheap holidays to Calpe are up for grabs in the off-season between November and April, but low double-digit temperatures may not make for the best beach days.

For a bargain break while the sun’s still smiling, head on over in May or October when the thermometer tickles the 20s.
